Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I park to start the La Via del Bitto Loop?

The trail typically starts from Gerola Alta. You'll find parking options available in the village, which serves as a convenient base for accessing the route.

When is the best time of year to mountain bike this loop?

The best time to ride is generally from late spring through early autumn. During these months, the weather is more stable, and the alpine passes are clear of snow. Be aware that after heavy rains, sections of the trail can become degraded and challenging.

Is the La Via del Bitto Loop dog-friendly?

Yes, dogs are generally allowed on the trail. However, as this route passes through an alpine environment with livestock and wildlife, it's crucial to keep your dog on a leash, especially in pastures and near huts. Always ensure you clean up after your pet.

Do I need any permits or pay an entrance fee for this trail?

No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to mountain bike the La Via del Bitto Loop itself. However, the trail is located within the Parco delle Orobie Valtellinesi, so please respect park regulations regarding nature and wildlife.

What is the terrain like on the La Via del Bitto Loop?

The terrain is quite varied and challenging. You'll encounter old trails and mule tracks with technical and rocky sections, including both fixed and loose rocks. Expect rock gardens, 'skinnies', steep and uneven parts, narrow bends, and even old steps. Some sections can be landslide-prone or wet, especially after rain, potentially requiring you to dismount and walk your bike. There are also forest tracks and dirt roads with hairpin bends.

What notable sights or landmarks will I see along the way?

The route offers diverse alpine scenery and historical points of interest. You'll pass through woodlands, fir forests, and meadows, often with views of small hamlets and peaks like Pizzo Varrone. Highlights include the Rifugio Trona Soliva, a mountain hut, and the scenic Pescegallo Lake. You might also spot remnants of ancient mining excavations and military structures like the Cadorna Line.

Is this trail suitable for beginner mountain bikers?

No, this loop is rated as 'difficult' for mountain biking, with a 'Red' difficulty and 'Hard' physical rating. It requires advanced riding skills and a very good fitness level due to significant technical challenges, uneven surfaces, and continuous obstacles. It's not recommended for beginners.

Does the trail intersect other well-known paths?

Yes, sections of this route overlap with several other trails. You'll find yourself on parts of the 'La Via del Bitto' (the broader historical route), the 'Gran Via delle Orobie - Tappa 3' and 'Tappa 4', and 'CamminaForeste - Tappa 6C'. There are also sections that follow 'Strada agro-silvo-pastorale Laveggiolo - Alpe Trona' and 'Antiche mulattiere'.

Are there any facilities or places to refuel along the route?

Yes, the Rifugio Trona Soliva is a mountain hut located along the route, offering a place to rest and potentially refuel. It's always wise to carry enough water and snacks for the duration of your ride, as other facilities may be limited.

What makes the La Via del Bitto Loop unique for mountain biking?

This loop stands out for its rich historical significance as an ancient transhumance route, intrinsically linked to the production of Bitto cheese. This cultural context, combined with an authentic alpine environment, natural trails, and diverse technical features like rock gardens and skinnies, offers a challenging and unique mountain biking experience in the Valtellina region.

What should I bring for a mountain bike ride on this trail?

Given the trail's difficulty and remote sections, you should bring a well-maintained mountain bike suitable for technical terrain, a helmet, appropriate protective gear, plenty of water, high-energy snacks, a repair kit, a first-aid kit, and navigation tools (like a GPS device or the komoot app). Layered clothing is advisable due to changing alpine weather.

July 2, 2023, Gerola Alta-Lago di Trona🔗⛓️🤦🔴⚠️💀

Vote lap: 5... MTB: eMTB In short, portage/spintage/tirage of everything except pedaling except in the stretch in between Physical effort:10 Emotion/satisfaction: 6 Landscape:8 Notes: So we arrive where the eMTB becomes an obstacle or impediment to decide whether to continue or not and in hindsight I would have done better to change laps but the spirit of adventure has had the upper hand. The landscape is not discussed but too many extreme areas and even a short but bastard vertical via ferrata ⛓️🔗. In conclusion, a tour NOT to be done. The Pescegallo lake was also planned but I declined due to the accumulated fatigue. See screenshots
