This route was planned by komoot.
The trail typically starts near the Café restaurant Valtarajal, located off the FV 30 road in Betancuria. You should find parking available in or around Betancuria, which is a popular starting point for hikers.
This hike is classified as 'moderate'. While not technically difficult, it's recommended for those with good fitness levels and regular walkers due to its length and elevation changes. Strong winds, common on Fuerteventura, can also add to the challenge.
You'll encounter a mix of unpaved paths and wider forest paths. The route includes walking along a ridge with continuous views. While much of Fuerteventura is arid, there's a unique section through the island's only pine forest. Slopes are mostly gentle, but some steeper sections exist.
The trail offers continuous beautiful views. Highlights include the 360-degree panoramic vistas from the Degollada de Marrubio Shelter and Viewpoint and impressive coastal views from Morro del Cortijo. You'll also pass through the island's only pine forest and start near historic Betancuria, home to the Church of Santa María de Betancuria and the Convent of San Buenaventura.
While Fuerteventura is generally dog-friendly, it's always best to keep your dog on a leash, especially in areas with wildlife or livestock, and to carry enough water for both of you. Please also remember to clean up after your pet.
No, you do not need a permit or have to pay an entrance fee to hike this section of the GR 131 or to access the Morro del Cortijo trail.
Fuerteventura has a mild climate year-round, making it suitable for hiking in most seasons. However, to avoid the hottest temperatures, the cooler months from autumn to spring (October to May) are generally preferred. Be prepared for strong winds, which can occur at any time.
Yes, within the pine forest section, you'll find the Castillo de Lara picnic area. This area is equipped with barbecue facilities, running water, and toilets, making it a great spot for a break. The Degollada de Marrubio Shelter and Viewpoint also offers a place to rest and enjoy the views.
Yes, this circular route forms part of the GR 131, also known as the Camino Natural de Fuerteventura. This long-distance trail traverses the island from north to south and is part of a larger network linking the Canary Islands.
Given its 'moderate' difficulty and approximately 10 km length, this trail might be challenging for very young children. However, older children with good fitness levels could enjoy it. The Castillo de Lara picnic area, with its playground, could be a good mid-point reward. Always carry plenty of water and snacks.
Yes, Betancuria, being a historic village and former capital, has several amenities. The trail typically starts near the Café restaurant Valtarajal, and you'll find other cafes and restaurants in the village where you can refuel before or after your hike.
Our last hike of this holiday started in Betancuria, the historic capital of Fuerteventura. After a walk through the really worth seeing and very well-kept little old town, we took the GR131 steeply up into the mountains around Morro del Cirtijo (637 m) with a wonderful view back to Betancuria on one side and Antigua on the other. However, there was a very strong wind, so we even had to link arms on the ridge to avoid being blown over or away.
On the fifth and final day of our hiking camp, the route took us to the historic pearl of the island: Betancuria. The tour began with a slight climb, which gave us the opportunity to admire the magnificent scenery and barren beauty of the mountains. The view of picturesque Betancuria, embedded in the landscape, was simply fabulous. The effort of climbing the Morro del Cortijo was definitely worth it. Back in Betancuria, a stroll through the town concluded our hike. This tour was not only the crowning conclusion of our hiking camp, but also the realization of how varied and breathtaking Fuerteventura is. Thank you, Betancuria, for this wonderful conclusion. This week was more than just hiking and we will always remember it. A huge thank you to Nicole ❤️ and Torsten ❤️ from Ostseeweg, who organized and ran this hiking camp.
Exhausting 🫠 because of the constant incline in the first hour 😬. But fantastically beautiful. Never had such a well marked tour. Great paths, gigantic views, agaves as far as the eye can see. The attempt to bring a birch forest to life is fascinating. A silence 😮😮😮. We only met 2 people (except in town of course). Let your soul dangle. . Definitely recommended.
Today a hike inland to the former capital of the Canary Islands...to Betancuria. The view after the ascent was magnificent. The town lovely and picturesque. All in all a great tour. Today in bright blue weather and a good 25 degrees like in the most beautiful summer. 🙋🏼♂️
A route well worth seeing. For us, the "greenest" hike on the island so far.
Today we took the rental car to Betancuria, a historic town on Fuerteventura with an old town worth seeing. We were lucky that it wasn't that busy when we arrived. After the city tour we went into the mountains to Morro del Cirtijo. It was pretty windy today and we were blown through quite a bit. Maybe you should choose a calmer day for this hike. The route ran largely on the GR 131 long-distance hiking trail. A really nice tour even if there isn't much green left in the pine groves. We drove through town. Afterwards there is free parking. Nice place. Easy walk through the stone desert. Great views.
