I am proud to present to you one of the most difficult climbs in Ticino, but at the same time the most beautiful. Here is the climb of Alpe di Neggia, which connects Gambarogno, in Switzerland, to Maccagno, in Italy, generally only accessible in the summer season.
Depart from Luino train station. The first 25 kilometers are a real walk. Cycle along Lake Maggiore, crossing Maccagno and crossing the Italian-Swiss border at Zenna.
In Gambarogno turn right and start pedaling uphill. Especially in the first part the road is very panoramic, as there is no shortage of points where you can admire Lake Maggiore in all its beauty. As you go up the road becomes narrower and the slope always remains challenging. In fact, expect 13 kilometers of climbing with an average gradient approaching 10% on average.
Along the climb you cross a wooded area, spectacular between September and October. The road that leads to Alpe di Neggia, in fact, offers wonderful foliage, and you will not easily forget the red color of the leaves.
At the top of Alpe di Neggia there are a couple of refreshment points, two ski lifts and, above all, a splendid view of Lake Maggiore. The descent passes through the small town of Indemini, which represents the border between Switzerland and Italy.
The final part of the descent allows you to admire Maccagno from above. Once you reach this little pearl of Lake Maggiore, pedal another five kilometers to reach Luino station.

Today I did a challenging ride up to Alpe Neggia from Vira (Switzerland). It's the first time I've been there and it's been a bit tiring but it's wonderful. You can always see Lake Maggiore as you go up and I've seen very few cars.
Beautiful round, perfect for autumn.. a big climb, everything quite steep with a beautiful view. After about 980m there is a cozy little restaurant
The Swiss side of Alpe Neggia is without a doubt the most challenging climb in the Varesotto/Canton Ticino area, then if the start is at 11.3 everything becomes much more complicated.... It is a beautiful climb with an average gradient and length similar to the Mortirolo, asphalt made in CH, very few cars... but it is better to do it in the cool, starting at a cyclist's time! return from the Italian side with a stop for a regenerating swim in Maccagno! super!
The opposite direction is less steep but there is a lot more sun also. This is why I called this the "Summer" variant. ☀️
