This loop tour is considered to be of moderate difficulty. It requires a good level of physical fitness due to its length and elevation changes. While some trails in the Parco delle Serre are easy, this specific route is a moderate excursion.
The trail primarily consists of natural paths, making up about 7 km of its length. You'll also encounter some asphalt sections. Be aware that some parts, especially those leading directly to the waterfall from Contrada Felicella, can be overgrown with thorny undergrowth. For an easier approach to the waterfall, particularly if hiking with children, consider taking the 'via della jeep'.
The highlight of this loop tour is the picturesque Assi Waterfalls (Pietracupa), featuring a small waterfall and a pond. You'll also cross a charming Rustic wooden bridge in the Parco Naturale Regionale delle Serre. Near the waterfall, there's a picnic table, perfect for a break.
The starting point of the loop tour is conveniently located near a parking area, making access straightforward for hikers arriving by car.
The warmer months are ideal for hiking this trail, especially if you wish to enjoy the refreshing pond at the Cascata dell'Assi. The diverse forest types in the Parco delle Serre offer beautiful scenery throughout spring, summer, and autumn.
While the trail is generally accessible, some sections can be overgrown with thorny undergrowth. If bringing a dog, ensure they are comfortable with varied terrain and consider taking the 'via della jeep' for a smoother path to the waterfall. Always keep your dog on a leash and clean up after them.
Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required for hiking on public trails within the Parco Naturale Regionale delle Serre. However, it's always good practice to respect local regulations and signage within the park.
The loop tour is considered moderate and some sections can be challenging or overgrown. While the waterfall is a great destination, for an easier approach with children, it's advised to take the 'via della jeep' instead of the path from Contrada Felicella, which has more difficult sections and a dilapidated bridge.
You'll be immersed in the rich biodiversity of the Parco delle Serre, passing through various forest types including spruce-fir, larch, pine, beech, chestnut, poplar, and oak. Keep an eye out for local flora and fauna typical of the Calabrian Apennines.
The trail itself is a natural hiking experience, so expect limited facilities directly on the route. There is a picnic table near the waterfall for a break. It's advisable to bring all necessary supplies, including water and snacks, and plan for facilities before or after your hike in nearby towns.
The estimated duration for completing this hike is approximately 3 hours and 12 minutes, depending on your pace and how long you spend enjoying the sights.
The way there is easy. It seems to be a route which, according to the information board, is also made with jeeps. Even if it might get rough in the jeep at times. There's a pretty picnic table by the waterfall below. Children would certainly have a good time here in summer. The way back was a bit more challenging in places. The hiking trail marked with a fine black line in Komoot has not been maintained/walked on for a long time. It is still recognizable, but half overgrown with thorny undergrowth. My husband used a walking stick as a 'machete'. Nevertheless, we kept getting stuck on thorns. His favorite hiking pants now have a hole in them and my hat has suffered too 😕. Then we found a trail that wasn't marked. He gave us a shortcut to another marked hiking trail. After that there should have been a junction that we didn't find. There was something like a path at the beginning, but it ended in the undergrowth 😭. So in the end we had to go back to the wide path that led to the Strada Provinciale about 2 km further from our parking lot. It has hardly any traffic, but there are nicer things than walking on asphalt. I recommend taking the same route as the way there for the way back.
