This superb promontory offers you a clear 360-degree view of the Black Forest and the Alps when the sky is clear. It is also an ideal location to admire the summit of the Grand Ballon from a little more perspective.

Trail Reviews

July 6, 2023, Grand Ballon – Lac du Ballon Rondje vanuit Geishouse

At the end of the walk, the asphalt road (Route des Crètes) was a letdown. It is better to take the hiking trail S1, which leads directly to the starting point.

Another great tour. The 360-degree view from the summit of the Grosser Belchen is unparalleled. Miles of visibility stretches from the valleys below to the horizon. The hike around Lac de Ballon was very varied. It went up and down, sometimes over an alpine pasture, then through a beautiful deciduous forest, and time and again the forest opened up to reveal a panoramic view all the way to the Black Forest. 👍🏼

At the top of the Grand Ballon you have a great view. The path to the lake is easy to walk, a path with gravel and stones and a pleasant gradient. It is worth taking another break at the lake. There is also a picnic bench here. The rest of the path is nice, but now offers a rather average backdrop and no special views. The climb back is extremely steep at times, but on a forest path that is easy to walk. Entertaining tour. Today, thanks to the cloud cover above 1200m, the weather is perfect for a golden autumn day with sun and no wind!

The last loop, to vantage point 9, leads directly to the busy road, which you walk along for about 1 km. It's just dangerous, nothing to see. Otherwise a nice round, mostly not so heavily frequented.

The route to the lake is beautiful, after that the attractiveness drops significantly. I can't answer the question of whether the tour should be reversed better.

A wonderful tour with many great views. Easy to walk, not too steep, but sturdy shoes are essential.

A wonderful circular hike even in mixed weather. Great views from the highest mountain in Alsace, beautiful paths through blueberry fields. Just avoid the Ferme du Gustiberg. The food looks good in the photo, but tasted awful.
