Cycling

Embark on a challenging touring bicycle adventure with the Hilden to the Black Mountain loop, a difficult 24.5-mile (39.4 km) route that takes about 2 hours and 40 minutes to complete. You will gain 1563 feet (477 metres) in elevation as you cycle through peaceful riverbank environments, extensive woodlands, and varied meadows. The trail offers diverse scenery, winding alongside the River Lagan before ascending towards Black Mountain, where you can enjoy elevated views across the valley.

This loop is rated as a hard bike ride, requiring very good fitness due to its significant ascents, especially the climb to Black Mountain. While the route features mostly paved surfaces, making it generally suitable for touring bikes, be prepared for some unpaved segments where you might need to push your bike. Plan your ride to account for these challenging sections.

The Hilden to Black Mountain loop is a popular and highly-rated touring cycling route within the Lagan Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It forms part of the larger Lagan and Lough National Cycle Network Route 9, providing a traffic-free link. As you ride, you will pass through the Lagan Valley Regional Park, known for its rich flora and fauna, and historical sites like the Giant's Ring archaeological site.

Divis and the Black Mountain

Highlight • Summit

Great Climb and worth it.

Divis and the Black Mountain are the highest points boasting views across the north. Divis or Dubhais meaning ‘black ridge’ refers to the dark basalt bedrock.

The Mountains rest in the heart of the Belfast Hills and provide a backdrop to the cities landscape. A mosaic of grassland and heathland bog, they are home to a host of wildlife and archaeological remains.

Divis stands at 478 metres (1,562ft) and Black Mountain at 390 metres (1,275ft)

Lagan Meadows Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural

Just of the towpath is the Meadows. A really peaceful part of the stretch, especially considering how close it is to the town centre.

This route in the meadow itself explores a beautiful Local Nature Reserve in the Lagan Valley with varied wildlife habitats. Including the odd adventurous Seal and Kingfishers.

Spent many a time just sitting on a tree here, having not seen a soul for hours. A real gem.

Shaw's Bridge

Highlight • Historical Site

The bridge is named after Captain John Shaw of Oliver Cromwell's army, who built an oak bridge here in 1655. A stone bridge was built by Thomas Burgh in 1691, although this was destroyed by flooding, which led to it being replaced by the present bridge in 1709.
