Running
Lac d'Amour is a stunning, high mountain lake nestled in a dip below the awe-inspiring Pierra Menta, with its imposing rocky ridgeline. The bright blue water is often fringed by snow, and it’s accessed by some incredible running trails, making it a perfect destination for a long mountainous loop of the area.
This Tour starts on the banks of Lac de Saint-Guerin, another dazzlingly blue mountain lake, and sets off up the long hill, following winding trails and crossing boardwalks to reach Col du Pré. The running is fairly easy underfoot, but it’s a tough test of the legs to run the whole way.
From the top, there’s a short stretch on the smooth tarmac that makes this road so popular with cyclists. You’ll also be treated to mind-blowing mountain views over Lac de Roselend towards Mont Blanc. The final section of the descent follows forest tracks to reach the river at the apex of the lake. The route now heads upwards again, climbing steeply up the mountainside until Lac d’Amour unexpectedly pops into view towards the top. It’s well worth taking a break here to soak up the spectacular setting.
Leaving the lake, you’ll follow a good trail that slices through a vast scree slope, ending in a steep climb up to the Col du Coin, the high point of the route and another dramatic viewpoint. From here, a fantastic section of single-track awaits, weaving through the rocks and giant natural sculptures around the Croix du Berger. You’ll often see marmots here, flowing over the rocks, an eye on the eagles circling overhead.
From the Cormet d'Arêches, it’s downhill all the way to the finish. You’ll pass the scenic Lac des Fées and then run the engaging valley trail back to Lac de Saint-Guerin, finishing with enjoyably easy lakeshore running.
Lac de Saint-Guerin has parking and a buvette serving drinks and snacks between June and September. It’s easily reached by car or the NO1 bus, which links Beaufort with Lac de Saint-Guerin, via Arêches. The bus is free and runs between July and September. The restaurant, La Pierra Menta, is on the road section after the Col du Pré, offering food and drink to have in or take away. On the descent back to Lac de Saint-Guerin, you’ll also pass close to the Refuge de l'Econdu, which is open from June to September and offers drinks and snacks with friendly service and a view or, if you book in advance, meals and accommodation.
This Tour crosses remote and high terrain, so it’s definitely worth carrying extra layers and emergency kit as well as food and water. You’ll cover around 25 kilometres (15.5 mi) with 1,110 metres (3,642 ft) of ascent. Trail shoes with good grip and protection are essential for safe and enjoyable running here.
Running in this area is seasonal and dependent on the conditions. This Tour is described for snow-free conditions only, which are usually between the end of April and November but vary considerably, so check the forecast before setting out.
