This circular tour is generally considered to be of moderate difficulty. While many parts are easily accessible, some sections might require good fitness due to varied terrain. It's suitable for most active individuals, but beginners should be prepared for an 8.38 km (5.2 miles) walk with around 100 meters (328 feet) of elevation gain.
The route offers a diverse mix of terrain. You'll walk through cobbled streets and narrow alleys in Ribadesella's old town, transition to sandy paths along beaches like Santa Marina Beach, and enjoy promenades, including the Paseo de la Grúa, which runs alongside the Sella River.
This tour combines urban charm with natural beauty. You'll see the historic center of Ribadesella, modernist mansions along Santa Marina Beach, and murals by Antonio Mingote on the Paseo de la Grúa. Key highlights include the Santa Marina Beach, the Bridge over the Sella River, and the Chapel of Santa Ana. You'll also pass the Hermitage of Our Lady of Guidance, which offers stunning coastal views.
Yes, the route offers several excellent viewpoints. From the Hermitage of Our Lady of Guidance, you can enjoy one of the best views of the Cantabrian Sea. Another notable spot is the View of Playa de L'Atalaya from Monte Corberu, providing picturesque coastal vistas.
The best time to hike this trail is generally during the spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) when the weather is mild and pleasant, and the crowds are smaller. Summer can also be enjoyable, especially for beach sections, but it can be busier.
Ribadesella has various parking options within the town, especially near the river or the beaches. It's advisable to arrive early, particularly during peak season, to secure a convenient spot close to the start of the circular route.
While specific regulations for this exact route aren't detailed, many urban and coastal paths in Spain allow dogs on a leash. Given the mix of city streets and beaches, it's generally recommended to keep dogs on a leash, especially in populated areas and to respect local signage regarding beach access for pets.
No, there are no permits or entrance fees required to hike the Ribadesella City Tour. It's a publicly accessible route through the city and natural areas.
Yes, the route intersects with sections of several other paths, including the Northern Route (Asturia), Mtb Northern Route (Asturia), and the Ruta entre playas. You'll also find it crosses parts of the Paseo de la Princesa Letizia and the Camín de Guía.
Absolutely! As the route passes through the city of Ribadesella, you'll find numerous cafes, restaurants, and bars, especially in the historic center and along the waterfront. This makes it easy to grab a snack, a meal, or a refreshing drink during or after your hike.
For this moderate hike, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes suitable for varied terrain (cobbles, sand, pavement). Bring water, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and a light jacket, as coastal weather can change. Don't forget your camera for the beautiful views!
The weather forecast announced clouds, thunderstorms and occasional rain. Since we had been hiking for a long time yesterday, we decided to drive to the sea: to Ribadesella! That was worth it! Beautiful, sparkling clean beach, pretty town with a market, bars and other shops and a breathtaking view from the Ermita de la Guia. It stayed wonderfully mild and then the clouds cleared here and there, so that the sun came out and we spent a really great, sunny, September-untypical vacation day.
