The Tremalzo Big Tour is rated as difficult, requiring a good level of training and mountain biking experience. Some technical sections are comparable to S3-S6 on the Single Track Scale, though it also includes easier parts.
The trail has distinct characteristics for ascent and descent. The climb typically starts on a cycle path, transitioning to a long asphalt road with an average 7% gradient, sometimes with steep dirt road shortcuts or cobblestone. The descent is thrilling, primarily along old military roads from World War I, featuring numerous hairpin bends, steep dirt sections with loose gravel, and technical singletrack with roots and gullies.
You can expect spectacular and varied scenery, including breathtaking views of Lake Garda, especially during the descent along historic military roads. The trail also offers picturesque views of Lake Ledro, diverse landscapes with nature reserves, open fields, and lush forests. You'll pass through tunnels and along scenic ridges, adding to the visual drama.
The Tremalzo Big Tour is best experienced between April and October, when the weather conditions are generally most favorable for mountain biking in the region.
The provided information does not specify a dog policy for the Tremalzo Big Tour. It's always best to check local regulations or contact the park authority (e.g., Alto Garda Bresciano Nature Park) directly before bringing your dog on the trail.
There is no information indicating that a specific permit or entrance fee is required for the Tremalzo Big Tour. However, it's always advisable to check for any updates from local authorities before your visit.
The tour typically starts from Riva del Garda. While specific parking details aren't provided, Riva del Garda offers various parking options. The route is a loop, so you'll return to your starting point.
Yes, while the tour is challenging, you can make it more accessible by using a shuttle service for part of the ascent. This allows riders to experience the renowned descent without the full strenuous climb.
A significant feature of the tour is the descent along the historic military roads from World War I. These roads, carved into the rock with numerous hairpin bends, provide a unique historical backdrop to your ride. You'll also pass by the Pile-dwelling Village at Lake Ledro, a historical site.
The tour offers many highlights, including the historic Ponale Trail, the charming Prè di Ledro Village, and the Lakeside cycle path at Lake Ledro. You'll also pass through the Corno della Marogna Tunnel and reach Monte Tremalzo. Don't miss the stunning View of Lake Garda from Passo Rocchetta and the picturesque Pregasina — village with views over Lake Garda.
Yes, the route incorporates sections of several other trails. Notably, it covers a significant portion of the Rampiledro trail and also intersects with parts of the Ciclovia Val di Ledro, Strada militare di Lorina, and the Sentiero del Ponale Giacomo Cis.
The tour starts and ends near Riva del Garda, which offers numerous cafes, pubs, and restaurants. As the route passes through areas like Prè di Ledro Village and near Lake Ledro, you may find options for refreshments there as well, especially towards the end of your ride.
Finally, I did a long loop on Tremalzo with my best friend. It was one of the coolest and most spectacular tours we've ever experienced. It's a shame that visibility on Tremalzo was virtually zero, so we couldn't enjoy the panorama. The elevation gain isn't quite correct; it's supposed to be around 2,500 meters...but whatever, the main thing is that it was an adventure.
Strenuous but absolute highlight round on Lake Garda🤩
One of the most beautiful routes that can be done in northeastern Italy
Classic on Lake Garda. Tremalzo has to be every few years. After Lake Ledro take the road up to Tremalzo. And gravel trail's downhill again. Finally a cappuccino in Pregasino. Graduation beer 🍺 in Riva and quickly up the Torre, that was still exhausting. So many stages 🥵
Today we set off from Arco with the aim of reaching the Tremalzo pass in the vain hope of finding some fresh air. After Riva we took the semi-deserted Ponale (strange) and reached Lake Ledro. Through the cycle path we took the long paved climb (about 14 km) which only becomes a dirt road in the last 2 km. From Tremalzo we descended the exposed dirt road to Passo Nota. After a break at the Refuge we went down to Pregasina and then back towards Ponale. Descents that are never too technical but not trivial because they are very exposed. Path also feasible in gravel with 45 mm tires and up.
If there's one epic mountain bike tour on the northern shore of Lake Garda, it's the Tremalzo. Sporty and technically challenging, with endless panoramic views.
