This route was planned by komoot.
The Monte Fior di Cosimo Loop is rated as a moderate hike, but sections are quite demanding and can feel hard, especially due to the terrain. The ascent through the chestnut forest can be challenging with overgrown paths, and the ridge path is often very narrow with steep slopes, making it particularly difficult for those with vertigo. Good fitness and sure-footedness are essential.
The loop is approximately 6.7 km long with an elevation gain of about 570 meters. It generally takes around 2 hours and 47 minutes to complete, though some descriptions suggest up to 4 hours depending on pace and conditions.
The terrain varies significantly. Initially, you'll navigate through a chestnut forest where paths can be overgrown and difficult to follow. Higher up, the trail becomes more distinct along the ridge, but it's often very narrow with steep drops on both sides. You'll encounter sections of old lava flows and enjoy panoramic views.
The trail offers spectacular panoramic views of Valle S. Giacomo, Piano Dell'Acqua, Zafferana Etnea, Val Calanna, and the Valle del Bove. You can also see the summit craters of Mount Etna, including the prominent Southeast Crater, and views extending to the sea. Notable features include the Mount Fior di Cosimo summit, a majestic centuries-old holm oak tree, and the View of the Calanchi Cliffs, Parco dell'Etna. You'll also pass by the 1992 Lava Flow – Parco dell'Etna (Mount Etna Park) and a Lava Flow with Sea View.
Yes, the route intersects with several other trails. Significant portions of the loop follow sections of the Sentiero Italia - Tappa V23D and the Sentiero Monte Tondo - Monte Fior di Cosimo. You'll also find smaller sections overlapping with Val Calanna, Sentiero Italia - Tappa V23E, and Strada di Cugno di Mezzo.
The trail is best enjoyed during spring and autumn when temperatures are milder and vegetation is vibrant. Summer can be very hot, and winter may bring snow and ice, making the already challenging ridge sections more hazardous. Always check weather conditions before heading out.
The trail is located near Zafferana Etnea in Sicily. While specific parking areas are not detailed, hikers typically start from points accessible by car in the vicinity of Zafferana Etnea, within the Etna Regional Park. It's advisable to check local maps or recent trail reports for the most convenient starting points and parking options.
While dogs are generally allowed in Parco dell'Etna, the challenging nature of this specific trail, with its narrow ridge paths and steep drops, might not be suitable for all dogs, especially those not accustomed to difficult terrain or those prone to vertigo. If you bring your dog, ensure they are on a leash and capable of handling the strenuous conditions.
Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required for hiking on the trails within Parco dell'Etna, including the Monte Fior di Cosimo Loop. However, always respect park regulations, stay on marked paths where possible, and be mindful of the natural environment.
This trail is not recommended for beginners due to its challenging terrain, overgrown sections, and particularly the narrow, exposed ridge with steep drops. Hikers with vertigo should exercise extreme caution; it is strongly advised to consider turning back after reaching the summit and seeing the monumental holm oak to avoid the most demanding ridge sections near Capanna del Ghiro, where the terrain drops significantly on both sides.
Given the trail's difficulty and varied terrain, you should bring sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support, plenty of water, snacks, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and layers of clothing suitable for changing weather conditions. A map or GPS device is highly recommended due to potentially overgrown and indistinct paths in some sections. Trekking poles can also be very helpful.
Attention: From the halfway point onwards, it is very impassable, steep uphill/downhill (depending on direction), unclear paths, slippery. Definitely not a moderate hiking trail! As fit hikers, we had some challenges to overcome. Counter-clockwise, it's no longer a hiking trail. Cleared trees, washed-out path. In case of a change in weather or darkness, there is a great danger of getting lost. Therefore, this path is currently not (!!) recommended. 03/26
