Running

Get ready for a trail run of over 17 kilometers through the Limburg forests. Your effort over this rolling terrain will be rewarded with interesting historical highlights and impressive views.

Hidden in the Savelsbos lies the prehistoric Rijckholt flint mine. If you are in your rhythm, you can continue running, but for those who want to catch their breath and are curious, it is definitely recommended to take a look. More than 6,000 years ago, flint utensils were made here.

A little further on you will pass another interesting historical point, namely one of the quarries in this area. You will regularly encounter them on your trail runs through Limburg, because the chalk landscape of South Limburg consists of land that people could use for all kinds of purposes long ago. The grooves were created when the soil was dug.

Running through a rolling landscape can be strenuous, but you are rewarded with beautiful views over the fields and forests just before halfway through the route.

The route starts at Bosrand campsite, where you can park or get off at the Bosrand campsite bus stop. Don't forget to bring plenty of water and a snack.

South Limburg is characterized by a chalk landscape consisting of soil that humans could use for all kinds of purposes long ago. During the mining, various quarries were created throughout Limburg. Here you see such a quarry. By the way, this is not the only quarry in this area, if you take a walk or trail run here, you may have come across them before and will come across more on your journey.

House De Beuk (Savelsbos)

Highlight • Monument

This old forester's house dates from 1848 and was built by order of the Martens family from the Belgian university city of Leuven, who owned the forest at the time. The marlstone house was not named after the beech tree but after the first residents, the Beuken family. For three generations, descendants of the family worked here as forester or field guard. You can read this and much more on the information board at Huis De Beuk.
