Don't feel like a long walk far away from the pleasures of the city? Then this walk is for you! This relaxing 4-kilometer walk through Breda offers a fascinating combination of greenery and artistic expression. The walk starts and ends within walking distance of Breda station and is therefore easily accessible by public transport. If you come by car, you can park at Parkare Breda, for example.

This route takes you to Valkenberg Park in Breda, a meeting place for young and old, surrounded by greenery and close to the impressive Breda Castle. Here you can not only enjoy the natural beauty, but also admire numerous works of art that embellish the surroundings.

As you walk, you can admire Breda Castle, a historic highlight of the city. The castle has a rich history and is definitely worth seeing from a distance. Today it houses the military academy and is not open to the public, but it remains an impressive structure that characterizes the city.

You will also walk past the Breda Beguinage, a historic district dating back to the 13th century. Here single women and widows lived in a community. The charm and history of this place can still be felt as you wander through the picturesque streets.

Then the walk is over and you can decide how to continue your adventure. Will you wander through the beautiful park again, visit a museum to enjoy even more art or visit a cozy terrace? The choice is yours!

Beguinage Breda

Highlight • Historical Site

The Begijnhof is the most rustic spot in the city center of Breda. The history goes back more than 750 years. Then the court was closer to Breda Castle. In 1531, Henry III of Nassau needed the land to expand his castle. He gave the pious women this piece of land in Valkenberg. In return he promised the Beguines that the court would always have the protection of the Nassaus. He kept his word, which means that the Beguinage is now one of the two remaining Beguinages in the Netherlands.
The last Beguine died in 1990. Only unmarried ladies still live at the court. You can see how the Beguines lived and worked in the Beguinage Museum at number 29. The garden of the Beguinage is a herb garden. You will find hundreds of types of herbs there. The Beguines used these for their work in healthcare.
TIP: The gatehouse houses the Miniature and Dollhouse Museum.

In the margin: Beguinages are rare in the Netherlands, in addition to Breda there is also one large Beguinage in Amsterdam.
