The trail is generally rated as moderate. It's a 'reverse hike,' meaning you start with an easy downhill descent into the grove, but the return trip involves a sustained uphill climb of approximately 500-700 feet (150-210 meters) over about one mile. While challenging on the way back, it's often considered family-friendly and accessible for most hikers, including beginners.
The round trip distance for the hike is about 2 to 2.5 miles (3.2 to 4 km). Most hikers complete it in 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on their pace and how much time they spend exploring the grove.
The trail starts at the Tuolumne Grove parking area, located just off Highway 120 (Big Oak Flat Road) near the Big Oak Flat Entrance to Yosemite National Park. There are pit toilets available at the trailhead. You can find the parking area at Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias Restroom & Parking.
The trail primarily follows the Old Big Oak Flat Road, which is wide and paved in sections. As you descend, you'll pass through a mixed conifer forest before reaching the Giant Sequoias. Once in the grove, a smaller, easy half-mile loop trail allows for close-up views of the trees.
The main attractions are the majestic Giant Sequoias themselves. Notable trees include the famous "Dead Giant" or "Tunnel Tree", which had a tunnel carved through it in 1878, and "Big Red". You can find the Tunnel Tree at Tunnel Tree (Dead Giant), Tuolumne Grove. The trail also follows a historic route, the Old Big Oak Flat Road, with interpretive signs providing ecological and historical information.
The trail is accessible year-round. Spring and fall offer pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds. In winter, it's a popular spot for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, though the uphill return can be more strenuous in snowy conditions. Summer is also popular, but expect more visitors.
Pets are allowed on the paved portions of the trail (Old Big Oak Flat Road) but are not permitted on the side routes or unpaved trails within the grove itself. Dogs must be on a leash at all times.
The Tuolumne Grove Trail is located within Yosemite National Park, so you will need to pay the park entrance fee. No additional permits are required specifically for hiking this trail. For current entrance fees and any reservation requirements, please check the official NPS website for Yosemite National Park.
There is no drinking water available in the grove or along the trail. Pit toilets are located at the trailhead parking area. Hikers should bring their own water, especially given the uphill return.
Tuolumne Grove is often considered a quieter and less crowded alternative to the much larger Mariposa Grove. While Mariposa Grove boasts hundreds of Giant Sequoias, Tuolumne Grove features about two dozen mature trees, offering a more serene and intimate experience with these ancient giants.
Yes, the route primarily follows the Tuolumne Grove Road and also passes through sections of the Old Big Oak Flat Road.
