Monsal Trail, Longstone Moor & Great Longstone loop from Bakewell — Peak District National Park

Running

This difficult 12.9-mile (20.8 km) jogging loop from Bakewell offers a diverse and challenging experience, combining smooth railway paths with rugged moorland trails. You will gain 1190 feet (363 metres) in elevation over approximately 2 hours and 18 minutes, traversing varied terrain from tarmac to peaty paths through rushes and heather. Expect spectacular limestone dales, the meandering River Wye, and the iconic Headstone Viaduct, before climbing to expansive panoramic views across Longstone Moor.

Rated as difficult, this route demands very good fitness and sure-footedness, especially on the undulating moorland sections. While the Monsal Trail itself is generally easy and accessible, the inclusion of Longstone Moor significantly increases the challenge. Be prepared for potentially muddy and unpaved sections, particularly during wetter seasons. You can find pay-and-display car parks at former stations like Bakewell, Hassop, and Millers Dale, which provide convenient access points.

The route uniquely blends the historical significance of the former Midland Railway line with the natural beauty of the Peak District's White Peak hills. Jogging through the lit tunnels and across the five-arch Headstone Viaduct offers a glimpse into the past, while the ascent to Longstone Moor reveals ancient Bronze Age burial mounds and remnants of lead mines. This trail provides a comprehensive tour of the region's diverse landscapes and historical features.

Headstone Tunnel

Highlight • Trail

Stretching for 1,598 feet (487 m), Headstone Tunnel is the longest of all the tunnels on the Monsal Trail. Despite being well lit, it’s still a dark and cool place to explore. The tunnel was built in the 1860s by the Midland Railways to link Manchester with London. Headstone Tunnel was reopened in 2011, meaning the Monsal Trail could be fully linked.

Headstone Viaduct

Highlight • Monument

Headstone Viaduct is a breathtaking structure that crosses Monsal Dale. The five-arch bridge, which is 70 feet (21 m) tall at its highest point, affords fine views over the River Wye. Built in 1863 by the Midland Railway, many believed the structure blighted the view upon its completion. These days, however, it is iconic and has Grade II-listed status. The viaduct now carries the Monsal Trail, a traffic-free route for hikers, cyclists, horse riders and wheelchair users.
