This route is considered difficult and requires good to very good physical fitness, sure-footedness, sturdy hiking shoes, and prior alpine experience. Some sections are very demanding due to length, significant elevation changes, and technical challenges, including narrow, steep paths and potential landslides or snow.
The terrain is diverse and rugged, featuring steep, forested valleys, deep gorges, and towering peaks. You'll traverse rocky slopes and alpine meadows, with trails ranging from ancient mule tracks to demanding zigzag paths. Some sections may even require navigating cliff walls with handrails and chains. Dense forests cover much of the area, and paths can sometimes be obscured by leaves, grass, or snow.
Along the route, you'll encounter stunning natural features and historical remnants. Key highlights include the Val Grande gorge, the Malga Val Grande hut, the Saverio Occhi Bivouac, and the Acqua Calda Bridge. You'll also see immense green valleys, Lake Maggiore, and other cobalt blue lakes, with glimpses of Monte Rosa's snow-capped peaks.
The best time to hike is typically from late spring to early autumn. During autumn, the landscape transforms with vibrant ochre, ruby red, and warm yellow tones, offering a particularly scenic experience. However, be aware that paths can be obscured by snow in certain seasons, especially at higher elevations.
While Val Grande National Park generally allows dogs, specific rules and leash requirements may apply, especially in protected wildlife areas or near huts. It's always best to check the latest regulations directly with the park authorities before your visit to ensure a smooth trip with your canine companion.
Stelvio National Park generally does not require an entrance fee for hiking. However, for specific activities like overnight camping or accessing certain restricted areas, permits might be necessary. It's advisable to check the official Stelvio National Park website or contact park authorities for the most current information on permits and regulations before your trip.
The specific trailhead for the Camuna High Route: Val Grande can vary depending on your chosen segment. Access points are typically found in villages surrounding the Val Grande National Park. Parking availability will depend on the specific starting point; some trailheads may have designated parking areas, while others might require parking in nearby villages. Public transport options to reach these starting points can be limited, so planning your logistics in advance is crucial.

Yes, the route is part of the Alta Via Camuna and also passes through sections of the Gipeto and Slaàse trails. You might also encounter parts of the Ciclovia Karolingia and SICAI Ciclo routes.
Given the trail's difficulty and rugged terrain, essential gear includes sturdy hiking shoes with good ankle support, appropriate layers of clothing for varying weather conditions, a map and compass or GPS device, sufficient water and food, and a first-aid kit. Trekking poles are highly recommended for stability on steep and uneven sections. Due to the remote nature of the park, be prepared for self-sufficiency.
Due to the demanding nature of the trail, it's crucial to have prior alpine experience and good physical fitness. Be prepared for steep ascents and descents, potentially narrow paths, and sections that may be affected by landslides or snow. Always check weather forecasts before heading out, inform someone of your itinerary, and be aware that cell phone reception can be unreliable in remote areas of the park.
Strava altitude difference 717 m. Beautiful day, great walk with the Combriccola, very colorful environment. Deer 1 wooden🤣🤣 soul
Val Grande from Vezza D'Oglio in autumn you can see and hear the deer in love. Agrisilvopastiral road with a gentle slope, splendid colours.
Classification of a trip to Valcamonica to be done between the end of September and the beginning of October, to enjoy the concert of the baramiti dei deer in love. On the slopes of the valley floor, the majestic male deer are clearly visible with their harem of females in tow. Obviously, it is better to linger towards the evening and binoculars are necessary. Valgrande itself remains pleasant although heavily anthropized. The route, which is mostly on a paved road and unfortunately not suitable for carriage, follows the Valgrande torrent. It is possible (for those who want to shorten the route) to purchase a €10 ticket in Vezza d'Oglio to park in the "Le Valli" picnic area. Last note: I feel a bit of disdain and regret for the work at Plan de l'Asen, where they are renovating the Occhi bivouac and building a refuge. It is clear to no one that they want to transform the area into a money machine. But above all the bulldozer that makes a mess and scares the deer, do we want to talk about it?!
The route begins with about a kilometer and a half of paved road but not passable except by residents. You arrive at a picnic area called dell'Acquacalda. From there begins the path with pebbles, very easy to walk. The view is beautiful but the path is really long. Up to the Saverio Occhi refuge there are about 900 meters of difference in height, from the parking lot at m. 1145, up to the Refuge, m.2047. The self-managed refuge has 41 beds! Unfortunately the application closed during the return, so there are 7.3 km of descent missing.
Gorgeous sunny day. Beautiful hike in Val Grande and finally the roar. I hiked around the refuge while Virgi went down to the mountain hut, so she could wait for me and finally see the deer through binoculars. Everything was beautiful...
reconnaissance tour to plan new multi-day excursions 😍😍😍 the Camonica valley never disappoints 😍😍
