The M Trail on Mount Sentinel

Highlight • Trail

The "M" on the west face of Mount Sentinel has been a Missoula landmark since 1908, when Forestry Club members forged a zigzag trail up the mountain and students carried up stones to shape the symbol of the University of Montana.

The "M" Trail is a very popular area for hiking and running, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash. There are great views of Missoula and the entire valley from the trail, but should be noted that there is no shade, so try and get there early!

Being that this trail can get crowded, there are two alternative trails back down the mountain, one in the north towards the tree-line, and a slightly longer detour trail in the south if you continue on Evan's Trail.

Where can I park to access the trailhead?

The M Trail is easily accessible from the University of Montana campus in Missoula. Parking is available in various lots around the campus, though specific parking rules and availability may vary. It's a very popular spot, so arriving earlier in the day might help secure a good parking spot.

Is the trail dog-friendly?

Yes, the M Trail is generally dog-friendly. However, it's always best to keep your dog on a leash, especially given the trail's popularity and the presence of other hikers and wildlife. Please remember to pack out any waste.

Do I need a permit or pay an entrance fee to hike this route?

What is the terrain like on the M Trail?

Is this a good trail for beginners or families?

It involves a strenuous climb with an average grade of about 18%. For families with young children or absolute beginners, it might be challenging, but its short length makes it a rewarding effort for many.

Does the trail intersect other well-known paths?

Yes, this route primarily follows the Trail to the M. It also passes through sections of the Evans Trail, the Short Side Connector, the Hellgate Ridgeline, and the Sentinel Fire Road, offering connections to the larger Mount Sentinel trail system.

What is the main highlight of this hike?

The primary highlight of this hike is reaching the iconic 'M' symbol on Mount Sentinel, which offers spectacular panoramic views. You can find more details about this landmark at The M Trail on Mount Sentinel.

Are there any cafes or restaurants nearby after the hike?

What should I bring for this hike?

Even though it's a relatively short hike, it's steep, so bring plenty of water, especially on warmer days. Comfortable hiking shoes with good grip are recommended for the dirt and potentially slippery terrain. Sun protection (hat, sunscreen) is also advisable as parts of the trail can be exposed.
