This route was planned by komoot.
The circuit typically starts and ends in the picturesque fishing village of Portmahomack. You'll find parking available within the village, which serves as a convenient base for your hike.
The full circuit is approximately 14 kilometers (8.75 to 9 miles) long. Most hikers complete it in about 3.5 to 6 hours, depending on their pace and how often they stop to enjoy the views.
This is generally considered an easy to moderate walk, suitable for most ages and abilities. While largely accessible, be prepared for some rough ground, shingle beaches, and a few short but steep slopes. Reasonable fitness is recommended.
You'll walk along mostly grassy shorelines, but some sections can be muddy and damp, especially on the outward leg and near fishing bothies. The path is a mix of tracks, footpaths, and quiet minor roads. Expect some rough or overgrown parts, particularly along the eastern shore, and you'll navigate numerous gates and stiles.
Yes, the circuit is dog-friendly! However, you will encounter sheep and cattle in fields along the route, so it's essential to keep your dog under close control, preferably on a leash, to protect livestock and wildlife.
The circuit offers diverse scenery and points of interest. You'll pass the striking red and white striped Tarbat Ness Lighthouse, enjoy a view of Tarbat Ness Lighthouse from the beach, and see the beautifully restored 16th-century Ballone Castle. Keep an eye out for the "Creag nan Eun" (Cliff of Birds), a significant nesting site for seabirds.
The Tarbat Ness Circuit is enjoyable year-round, but spring and summer offer the best conditions for wildlife spotting and generally drier paths. The area has a relatively dry climate, giving it a 'Cornish' feel.
No, there are no permits or entrance fees required to hike the Tarbat Ness Circuit. It's freely accessible to the public.
The area is a haven for wildlife. You have excellent opportunities to spot seabirds, dolphins, and seals, especially around the headland. It's also an important landfall for migrating birds. You'll likely encounter sheep and cattle in the fields you pass through.
Yes, the circuit typically starts and ends in Portmahomack, a charming fishing village. You'll find local amenities there, including cafes and pubs, perfect for a refreshment before or after your hike.
Given its 'easy to moderate' difficulty and diverse scenery, the trail can be suitable for families with reasonably active children. However, be aware of muddy sections, rough ground, and the presence of stiles and gates, which might be challenging for very young children or pushchairs.
Only do this hike when it's dry. The rock formations and colors by the water are appealing. If you like gorse, you'll definitely enjoy it. It grows in abundance. Some of the paths lead right through the water. The section between the lighthouse and Rockfield along the water is very varied. Narrow paths up and down, rocky or soft, everything is there. Only the last one over the small, round stones is annoying; there's much less grip. They slip underfoot.
