The Drakes Circuit is an easy hike that typically takes around 1 hour and 24 minutes to complete. This is an estimate for the full loop around Loch an Eilein.
Yes, the Drakes Circuit is rated as easy and is very suitable for beginners and families. Its gentle terrain and relatively short distance make it a popular choice for all ages.
The trail primarily follows a well-maintained circular path around Loch an Eilein. It features mostly flat, hard-packed surfaces, making it accessible and pleasant for walking.
Along the Drakes Circuit, you'll enjoy picturesque views of Loch an Eilein and its historic island castle, Loch an Eilein Castle. The path, known as Loch An Eilein Circular Path, winds through beautiful Rothiemurchus Forest.
Yes, the Drakes Circuit is part of a network of trails in the Cairngorms. It intersects with sections of the East Highland Way, Cairngorms Loop, Scotland Trail, Rothiemurchus Forest & Loch an Eilein, and the Loch an Eilein Circular.
Dogs are generally welcome on the Drakes Circuit. However, as it's located within the Cairngorms National Park, it's important to keep dogs under close control, especially during lambing season or near wildlife, and to clean up after them.
The Drakes Circuit is enjoyable year-round. Spring and autumn offer beautiful colors and fewer midges, while summer provides longer daylight hours. Winter can be magical with snow, but check conditions as paths may be icy.
There is a dedicated car park at Loch an Eilein, which provides direct access to the Drakes Circuit. A small parking fee usually applies, which contributes to the upkeep of the area.
No, you do not need a permit to hike the Drakes Circuit, nor is there an entrance fee for Cairngorms National Park itself. There is typically a small charge for parking at the Loch an Eilein car park.
Yes, there are facilities available at the Loch an Eilein car park, including toilets and a visitor information point. Aviemore, a short drive away, offers a wider range of cafes, pubs, and accommodation options.
Even on an easy trail, it's wise to wear comfortable walking shoes and dress in layers suitable for Scottish weather, which can change quickly. Bring water, snacks, and insect repellent, especially during warmer months.
After a long nap, to compensate for the lack of sleep from the journey, we explored the area. 😊 ... beautiful here!
Easy walk around the Loch. Good access for a dook if you fancy that sort of thing.
Super easy, very accessible loop around a beautiful little loch with an island castle surrounded by hills - quintessentially Scottish. Come early or very late in the day to avoid crowds. Definitely dog accessible.
No. 51 of my #100komootwanders_2022 challenge. 💛 Friday 02nd September 2022. Having enjoyed a much needed coffee and cake at "The Barn" in Rothiemurchus after my solo morning hike up Cairngorm, I knew I was near Loch an Eilein and really wanted to visit it, plus I wasn't quite ready to head back to the hotel in Inverness either. So, off I went up a single track road to the large car park at the foot of the loch. There are large gravel tracks the entire route which are not impacted by the surrounding trees. There is a castle ruin out on the lochs island which would make for an ideal paddle. There was also a nice surprise too, one of the lochs view points was perfect and provided a clear and direct vantage toward Cairngorm Mountain.
Wonderfully quiet evening walk after 8 hours first aid course. Loch an Eilean is high on my list of favorite lochs. With an island with a castle ruin, snowy Cairngorms mountains in the background and pine forests on the shores, it is very photogenic. The normally busy hiking trails are pleasantly quiet around sunrise and sunset and parking is free during that period.
On the way we stop at a church with old stones with symbols of old stone circles. The meaning is probably not entirely clear. After a short stop for lunch in Aviemore we went to the Loch an Eilein. A footpath leads once around the lake. At the beginning with rain ☔ then after half the sun 🌤 came through. 🏞👍🤩
