How long does it typically take to complete this touring bicycle loop?

This challenging touring bicycle loop is approximately 36.6 kilometers (22.7 miles) long with about 600 meters (1970 feet) of elevation gain. It generally takes around 2 hours and 38 minutes to complete by bike, though individual times may vary based on fitness levels and stops for sightseeing.

Is this touring bicycle loop suitable for beginners?

No, this loop is rated as 'difficult' and requires very good fitness due to its significant elevation gain over its length. While some shorter segments might be easier, the entire 36.6 km route is not recommended for beginners.

What is the terrain like on the route?

The route primarily features paved surfaces, making it suitable for touring bicycles. However, despite being paved, the 'difficult' rating indicates that you should expect substantial climbs. Some sources suggest that certain sections might be unpaved or difficult, potentially requiring you to push your bike, especially on more adventurous detours.

Where does the touring bicycle loop start, and is there parking available?

The loop tour starts and ends in Celano. Parking is generally available in Celano, and specifically near the Piccolomini Castle of Celano. If you plan to visit the Archaeological Site of Alba Fucens, there is also parking available directly at the site.

What historical sites and viewpoints can I expect to see along the way?

This route offers a fantastic blend of historical and natural beauty. You'll pass by the impressive Piccolomini Castle of Celano. The primary highlight is the Archaeological Site of Alba Fucens, where you can explore ancient Roman ruins including an Amphitheater, commercial center, and forum, all set against the magnificent backdrop of Monte Velino. You'll also traverse the Valico Fonte Capo La Maina and pass by the Quatranella - Former Shepherds' Rest Stop and Well.

What is the best time of year to cycle this route?

The Abruzzo region, where this route is located, is known for its natural parks and mountains. The best time to cycle this route is typically during the spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) months when the weather is milder and the scenery is vibrant. Summers can be hot, and winters may bring colder temperatures and snow at higher elevations.

Are there any permits or fees required to cycle this route, especially within Parco Naturale Regionale Sirente-Velino?

The route passes through Parco Naturale Regionale Sirente-Velino. Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required for cycling on established routes within the park. However, it's always advisable to respect local regulations, stay on marked paths, and be mindful of the natural environment. There might be entrance fees for specific archaeological sites like Alba Fucens if you choose to enter the excavated areas.

Is this touring bicycle route dog-friendly?

While the route is primarily on paved roads and passes through historical sites, the general rules for dogs in Parco Naturale Regionale Sirente-Velino apply. Dogs are usually allowed on trails but must be kept on a leash to protect wildlife and ensure the safety of other visitors. Always carry water for your dog and clean up after them.

Does this route connect with other well-known cycling or hiking paths?

Yes, this touring bicycle route intersects with several other paths. You'll find sections that overlap with the Cammino dei Briganti MTB, the Path of the Brigands - stage 6, the Cammino di San Tommaso - Tappa 9, and the Tratturo Celano-Foggia. It also briefly touches upon the European Long distance path E1 - part Italy - Lazio/Abruzzo, Sentiero storico, Via Prato Pantane, and Strada 9.

Are there places to eat or drink along the route?

Celano offers various options for food and drink before or after your ride. Near the Archaeological Site of Alba Fucens, you might find some local cafes or trattorias, especially in the nearby villages. However, it's always a good idea to carry sufficient water and snacks, as services might be sparse on certain segments of the loop.

Is public transport available to reach the starting point of the tour?

Celano is accessible by public transport, primarily by bus services connecting it to larger towns in the Abruzzo region. You can check local bus schedules for routes to Celano. Bringing a touring bicycle on public transport might have specific regulations, so it's best to verify with the transport provider beforehand.

What should I wear or bring for this touring bicycle tour?

Given the 'difficult' rating and elevation gain, wear appropriate cycling attire, including padded shorts and a helmet. Bring plenty of water, snacks, sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses), and basic bike repair tools. A map or GPS device is highly recommended, and consider layers of clothing as temperatures can change, especially at higher elevations.

Trail Reviews

Abruzzo
January 16, 2024, 40. Nel cuore della Marsica

The short circular itinerary starts from Celano, the second center of the Marsica by number of inhabitants, located in a dominant position on the Fucino plain on the slopes of Mount Tino. It is characterized by the imposing presence of the Piccolomini Castle, originally built at the end of the 14th century as a military fortress and subsequently transformed into a residential palace by Antonio Todeschini Piccolomini, nephew of Pope Pius II. It currently houses the Marsica Museum of Sacred Art with works dating from the 6th to the 18th century, as well as an archaeological section dedicated to the Torlonia Collection, made up of finds found at the end of the 19th century during the drying up of Lake Fucino.
