Acequia de Lízar

Highlight • Trail

The hiking trail could be so beautiful... At the beginning of Frigiliana there is a very beautiful path over the irrigation canal with a railing on the side of the ravine. Unfortunately this railing ends after about 1.5 km, then the path becomes worse and more dangerous. Only sure-footed hikers with a head for heights should continue here. It's a shame, we wanted to descend a kilometer further into the dried-up riverbed of the Rio Higueron and hike back.

Small waterfall

Highlight • Waterfall

In this part of the river there is already constant water and, from time to time, small waterfalls appear. Going up the stones be especially careful, they can slip. It is recommended to have special shoes for water, or hiking boots that you can get wet, as you cannot avoid going through the water.

Río Higuerón Gorge

Highlight • Gorge

Not only a nice detour, but also a possible entry (coming from the north) to the official trail to Frigiliana.

In March 2019 (like Pilgrim Peter the year before) we first tried to take the upper descent down the mountain near Porta Verde to the Rio Higueron. Since the trail was not clear, quite steep and it was quite windy, we turned around. The second entry attempt at the cistern promised to become better, although at first we did not want it to be true that the "way" should be the (aquifer) riverbed.

At the waterfall there was a rope down, but since we did not know what awaits us behind it, we are then back a bit and have about 150m before the change made around the top. This way was actually ok, but cost me (since I am not afraid of heights) great overcoming.

For us an exciting experience and the absolute highlight of our hike.

Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is the Higuerón River route from Frigiliana?

This is a difficult trail, rated as such due to its length, varied terrain, and challenging sections. It's not suitable for beginners and requires good physical condition, sure-footedness, and sturdy footwear. Some parts involve walking in the riverbed, rock climbing, and navigating narrow, exposed paths like the Acequia de Lízar.

What kind of terrain can I expect on this hike?

The terrain is highly varied and challenging. You'll encounter mountain trails, rugged riverbeds where you frequently need to walk in water, and sections with dense vegetation. The route also includes the dramatic Río Higuerón Gorge and the historic Acequia de Lízar, which is an irrigation canal traversing steep, sometimes vertigo-inducing slopes.

What are the main points of interest along the trail?

You'll experience a diverse range of sights. Highlights include the stunning View of Frigiliana from the Callejón del Peñón terrace, the impressive Río Higuerón Gorge, and a charming Small waterfall. The historic Acequia de Lízar itself is a notable feature, offering spectacular panoramic views on the return journey.

Is the Route of the Higuerón River dog-friendly?

While dogs are generally allowed in the Parque Natural de las Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama, this specific route is not recommended for dogs. The trail involves extensive walking in the riverbed, rock climbing, and navigating narrow, exposed sections of the Acequia de Lízar that can be dangerous for pets, especially those not accustomed to such challenging terrain.

What is the best time of year to hike this route?

The best time to hike this route is typically in the spring or autumn. During these seasons, temperatures are milder, and the river levels are usually manageable. Summer can be extremely hot, and river levels might be lower, but the heat can be exhausting. Winter can bring colder temperatures and potentially higher, faster-flowing water in the river, making some sections more challenging or even impassable.

Do I need any permits or pay an entrance fee for this trail in the Natural Park?

No, you do not need a specific permit to hike the Route of the Higuerón River, nor is there an entrance fee for the Parque Natural de las Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama. However, always respect park regulations, such as staying on marked paths where possible, not disturbing wildlife, and packing out all your trash.

Where can I park for the Higuerón River route in Frigiliana?

Parking is generally available in Frigiliana itself. It's advisable to park in one of the public parking areas in the village and then walk to the trailhead. Specific parking instructions can vary, so checking local signage upon arrival in Frigiliana is recommended.

Does this trail intersect with other hiking paths?

Yes, the route shares sections with several other official trails. Notably, it covers a significant portion of the Ruta al Cóncar and the Acequia del Lizar. You may also briefly encounter parts of the Ruta Lomas del Chillar and Frigiliana - Nerja routes.

What should I bring for this challenging hike?

Given the difficult and varied terrain, you should bring sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with good grip, as you'll be walking in water. Essential items include plenty of water, snacks, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), a first-aid kit, and appropriate clothing layers. Trekking poles can be very helpful for stability in the riverbed and on steep sections. A waterproof bag for electronics is also recommended.

Is there a particular direction recommended for hiking the loop?

While the route is a round trip, many hikers prefer to ascend via the riverbed and descend along the Acequia de Lízar. This approach allows you to tackle the more technical river sections while you're fresher and offers spectacular, previously hidden panoramic views of the sierra on your return along the Acequia. Be aware that the Acequia itself has exposed and narrow sections.

August 19, 2025, Rio higuerón - acequia de Lizar - Frigiliana

Departure: from point B (the part up to point A is not recorded). A wonderful walk to do in summer (shade and water). You need shoes to walk in the water. The acequia is a bit dizzying (avoid it with children under 12?).

First, from Frigiliana, follow the water channel path until, after several kilometers, you reach the stream bed. Initially, the channel is well secured with a railing. However, after about 1.5 km, the railing ends and the path continues without a railing. Those with a sure footing and a head for heights will have no problems. If that's too unsafe for you, you should turn back, as there are three more special sections. After the railing, it was still easy to walk on the water channel wall. The wall was mostly 30 cm wide. However, there were two more places where it dropped directly down about 3 meters to the left and right. A bit adventurous, but still doable. The tricky sections were only short. At the very end of the channel hike, there is another tricky section. A rock overhangs, so you have to hold on to the edge with your hands and find support on the canal wall with your feet. That's how I mastered the section two days ago. Today, however, I noticed the steps that allow you to bypass this section. This way, you can skip the climbing section. After that, you reach the riverbed, and the path continues upwards along the riverbed. I tried walking on dry feet, and you often have to cross the stream. At some point, however, it becomes impossible and you're walking in the water. There are a few places where you have to climb over slippery stones in the stream. I had some rope scraps and pitons to help me. Until I couldn't go any further. Then I returned the same way.
