Hiking

Embark on the Anello dei Forti di Genova, a moderate hike that blends history with expansive views of Genoa and its surroundings. This 9.3-mile (14.9 km) route involves a total elevation gain of 1703 feet (519 metres) and typically takes around 4 hours and 41 minutes to complete. You will traverse varied terrain, from ancient mule tracks and forest paths to open fields and Mediterranean scrub, with some sections offering steep ascents and descents.

When planning your visit, remember that some parts of the trail are exposed to sun, wind, and rain, so bring appropriate footwear and enough water and food. While you can hike this route year-round, it is best to avoid periods immediately after heavy rainfall, as sections can become muddy and slippery, or during the hottest summer days. Starting points like Righi, accessible by funicular, or Trensasco make the trail easily reachable from the city.

The most distinctive feature of this trail is the series of military fortifications built between the 17th and 19th centuries, forming one of Europe's most extensive defense systems. As part of the "Parco Urbano delle Mura" (Urban Walls Park), the route allows you to explore forts like Forte Sperone, Forte Puin, and the highest, Forte Diamante, which sits at 640 meters. This unique blend of sport, nature, and history offers a memorable perspective of Genoa from above.

The cistern itself is not worth seeing, but the view of Genoa, especially at sunset, worth this effort!

Fort Puin

Highlight • Monument

Forte Puin was built in 1825 by the engineers of the Royal Corps Del Genio Sardo to defend the city of Genoa.
It was abandoned in the late 1800s but in 1963 it was given in concession to Dr. Fausto Parodi who after having restored it at his own expense lived there for twenty years.
Today the fort is in good condition but at the moment it cannot be visited.

View of Genoa from Forte Diamante

Highlight • Viewpoint

On the back of the Forte Diamante, on the right, the unmarked path descends steeply on the ridge towards Trensasco. The path joins a well-marked track that we follow to the right. Here the mule track is rather quiet, through numerous ups and downs it reaches the Osteria delle Baracche.
