In 1680 France occupied Alsace and Lorraine. The famous fortress builder Vauban expanded the city's medieval castle into a modern fortress in order to provide a bulwark against its western neighbor.

The mighty citadel of Bitsch really cannot be missed. Defenses have been built on this rock since the 12th century and the fortress as it stands today was built by Vauban during the 18th century.
