Delamere Forest Wetlands

Highlight • Forest

Delamere, which means ‘forest of the lakes’, is Cheshire's largest area of woodland. However, the forest you see today is all that remains of the vast forests of Mara and Mondrem, which covered more than 60 square miles (160 km2). They were established in the 11th century as hunting forests for the Norman Earls of Chester. These days, the forest is a serene place to explore and has three walking trails, as well as an activity centre and cafe, among other conveniences.

The decayed ramparts of Woodhouse Iron Age Hillfort are not easily visible these days. At one time, however, experts believe that the ramparts were once 13 feet (four metres) high. As you wander around this ancient fortress, it is amazing to imagine people going about their lives here thousands of years ago. You are afforded some lovely views, too.

A convenient starting point with parking is Barnsbridge Car Park. This allows for easy access to the loop.

Is this loop suitable for beginners?

While some sections within Delamere Forest offer easily accessible paths, other parts, especially along the Sandstone Trail, can be strenuous with steep ascents and potentially muddy, ill-defined tracks. The terrain is quite varied. You'll encounter undulating paths through woods and fields, defined forest tracks within Delamere Forest, and sections along a wooded sandstone ridge with cliffs and crags. Expect ascents and descents, some of which can be steep. During wetter months, some off-road sections can become muddy and slippery.

What kind of scenery can I expect to see?

The loop offers diverse and abundant scenery. You'll enjoy far-reaching views across the Cheshire Plains, potentially stretching to Wales and Liverpool, especially from viewpoints like Woodhouse Hillfort. The route passes through mixed woodlands, ancient forests, meres, bogs, and mosses within Delamere Forest, as well as oak-dotted pastures and farmland.

What is the best time of year to hike this loop?
