The estimated riding time for the Forte del Melogno e Foresta della Barbottina loop is approximately 4 hours and 51 minutes. This is for the full 39.9 km route with 1,730 meters of elevation gain, and it's classified as a difficult ride.
The terrain is highly varied and challenging. You'll encounter a mix of singletrack (about 16 km), traditional trails (13.5 km), and some roads. Expect stony and potentially dusty surfaces, with sections featuring compressions, berms, and small jumps. Some parts are fast and flowing through pine and beech woods, while others are steep and technical with fixed rocks and roots. It requires good energy management and brake control.
No, this trail is classified as difficult and requires good training and advanced riding skills. It is not suitable for beginners or families looking for an easy ride due to its length, significant elevation gain, and technical sections with rocks, roots, and steep descents.
This loop offers a rich blend of history and nature. You'll pass by the impressive Melogno Central Fort, a defensive structure from the late 19th century. You can also explore remnants of other forts like Bric Merizzo Fort, which offers views of the Ligurian coast. A major highlight is the Barbottina Forest, known for its towering beech trees and 'fairytale landscape'. You might also see the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Guard with views over the Calice Ligure Valley.
The Barbottina Forest offers a regenerating green environment year-round. While summer provides freshness, autumn is particularly spectacular with vibrant foliage. Spring and early autumn generally offer the most pleasant temperatures for mountain biking in the Liguria region, avoiding the peak heat of summer and potential snow/ice in winter at higher elevations.
Generally, dogs are allowed on trails in this region, but it's always recommended to keep them on a leash, especially in protected areas like the Barbottina Forest, to protect wildlife and ensure the safety of other trail users. Given the technical nature of this difficult mountain bike trail, consider if it's suitable for your dog's fitness and paw health.
There are no specific permits or entrance fees required to access the Barbottina Forest or to ride this mountain bike trail. However, always respect local regulations and private property signage.
Parking is typically available near Colle del Melogno, which serves as a common starting point for routes in this area. The trail is a loop, so you'll return to your starting point. The area around Melogno is well-known for mountain biking, and shuttle services are also available for bikers, which can be useful for accessing different parts of the trail network.
Yes, this extensive loop incorporates sections of several well-known mountain biking trails in the area. You'll ride parts of Collarina, Rollercoaster, Isallo Extasi, and Revenant, among others. This allows for a diverse riding experience through some of Finale Ligure's most famous singletracks.
While the trail itself is remote, the broader Finale Ligure area is well-equipped with cafes, restaurants, and accommodations. It's advisable to carry sufficient water and snacks for the duration of this challenging ride, as immediate options directly on the trail are limited. You can find services in nearby towns before or after your ride.
Given the trail's difficulty and length, you should pack essential mountain biking gear, including a helmet, gloves, appropriate clothing, and sturdy shoes. Carry plenty of water, energy snacks, a first-aid kit, a bike repair kit (spare tube, pump, multi-tool), and navigation tools. A fully charged phone is also recommended for emergencies, though signal can be intermittent in remote forest sections.
From the campsite via the Sentiero degli Alpini up to Gorra. There are a few technical key points that I pushed. Then on the Metantendo on the road to Eze. Then on road to the turnoff to Madonna della Guardi. Then on forest road up to Din and continue on road to Fort Melogno. Continue on the forest path to the entrance to the Isallo Extasy. Both Isallo Extasy and Revenant are S2 with some S3 passages. Fun to drive, but with the utmost concentration. Back towards Gorra and the same way back to the campsite
Even if they have been ridden by thousands... the trails in the Liguria region are ALWAYS fun❣️ For us it was the warm-up lap, for Urs it was his day off...😉 In the next few days we will be out and about together and let the locals guide us to other beautiful trails in the area. So today we're taking some classics under our wheels and just enjoying the feeling of "flying over the trails", sometimes more, sometimes less rough! Today was basically a warm-up lap over the hills of Finale. We took a shuttle up to Melogno and from there we continued under our own muscle power to the highest point of the loop, the Bric Merizzo at 1275m. This is also where the Isallo Extasy Trail starts. A cool trail that we rode 3 years ago and the Revenent, which was brand new back then. Now it was a bit more worn out but still cool! 🤩 To get back to Melogno you have to pedal hard again from Isallo. First moderately and then up a zigzag path with a gradient of up to 18% to the road that leads to Melogno. This is also where the really fun Rollercoaster Trail starts, which leads over 600m down into the valley. The constant ups and downs and the banked curves are actually reminiscent of a rollercoaster. We end the first day with an aperitif in the town @Daniela H. ☀️❄️ and @Urs D.. Thanks for the company and the cool photos! 👌
Avoid the climb after fast & furios which connects to the asphalted road for Melogno. We move from private property and the owner is not very shabby, let's say. Better to go up from asphalt
8th and last day Finale. We shuttle to Forte/Melongo and climb the altitude to Isallo Extasi, the approx. 600tm are wet in the first section, but very good at the bottom 👍🏻. Straight on to Revenant. It's going well 👌🏻. Refuel at Isallo 💧, because we're about to climb 600m to Din. There we stop at the rustic restaurant. The fireplace 🔥 is warming inside, very pleasant. Walter Röhrl 🚗 also seems to have liked it 😉. We went on the toboggan, rollercoaster and another nice rollercoaster 🎢 ride in the 600tm. From here we experiment a bit - we get to Finale Borgo via trails, narrow alleys and a hiking trail at the end. Almost perfect 👌🏻. For EVERYONE who comes here - we ate at Pomello in the evening. Great atmosphere in old walls, top grilled dishes 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Since we have climbed over 4000 m in the last few days, we wanted to take a shuttle😁...also nice🙃...the Isallo Extasi is really nice and not so crowded, wonderful views...but in some places I had a day of hiking😉 ...the Revenant is really S3😬...Rollercoaster, Sentiero delle Spine u. degli Alpini👍🏻😊...
