Hiking
Are you ready for a real challenge? Then go for this tough walk of no less than 24 kilometers from Heeze station to Weert station. This route promises to be an unforgettable experience, where you will encounter beautiful nature, historical sites and picturesque landscapes. Prepare yourself well for this tough hike, because it will be quite a challenge.
One of the highlights of this route is the impressive Heeze Castle, which played an important role during the Second World War. The castle acted as a safe depository for the municipality's population register, which saved it when the town hall was set on fire in a robbery in September 1943. The castle is a historic treasure and can only be visited as part of a guided tour. From May 1 through September 30, open tours are held on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons. In the summer months there are even extra tours on Wednesday afternoons.
For adults, the entrance fee is € 10.00 per person, while children from 4 to 17 years old pay € 5.00 per person. Children up to 3 years old can enter for free.
After admiring the castle, you continue walking along the picturesque Sterkselse Aa. The stream consists of the confluence of several streams on the border of North Brabant and Limburg.
You then walk through the beautiful De Pan nature reserve. This area offers a wonderful variety and is a pleasure to walk through. Here you will encounter forest, grassland and heathland.
Once you have arrived in Weert, you still have the opportunity to visit the picturesque marina and the impressive Sint-Martinuskerk. St. Martin's Church is the city's main church and a striking example of a late Gothic hall church in the Netherlands. Admire the beautiful vault paintings that are very detailed and colorful, and give the building a special appearance. Due to the exceptional quality of the vault paintings, the building is even listed in the Top 100 of the National Monuments Preservation Service. You can then take the train home in Weert.
