The Crimpiau from Capel Curig loop is generally estimated to take between 1 hour 41 minutes and 3 hours to complete. However, some hikers, especially those who take their time to enjoy the views or make stops, might spend over 5 hours on the trail. Factors like fitness level, weather conditions, and how often you pause will influence your total duration.
The trail conveniently starts from Capel Curig, which serves as an excellent base for hiking in Snowdonia. Parking is available in the village, though specific details on car parks might vary. It's advisable to check local signage upon arrival for the most current parking information.
The terrain on this loop is quite varied. You'll encounter woodland paths at the start, transitioning to more open mountainside. The ascent to Crimpiau's summit can be steep and rocky, with some sections described as loose underfoot. After heavy rain, certain areas, especially around Llyn y Coryn, can become boggy. Good waterproof boots are highly recommended for comfort and safety.
Despite its modest height, Crimpiau offers exceptional panoramic views. From the summit, you can see major mountain ranges and iconic peaks, including the Pedol Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon Horseshoe), Ogwen Valley, Tryfan, Pen yr Ole Wen, Pen yr Helgi Du, and the Conwy Valley. You'll also enjoy views of Llyn Gwynant and Eryri (Snowdonia), and pass by Llyn y Coryn. The view of the Ogwen Valley and Llyn Crafnant from Crimpiau is particularly highlighted as a great panorama.
The Crimpiau loop can be enjoyed in various seasons, but spring and autumn often offer the most pleasant conditions with clearer views and fewer crowds. Summer can be great, but be prepared for more people and potentially warmer weather. Winter hikes are possible but require appropriate gear and experience due to potentially challenging conditions like ice or snow, especially on higher, exposed sections.
While many trails in Snowdonia are dog-friendly, it's important to be aware of local regulations, especially concerning livestock. Dogs should be kept on a lead, particularly in areas with sheep or ground-nesting birds. The varied terrain, including rocky and potentially boggy sections, means your dog should be fit and comfortable with such conditions.
Typically, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Crimpiau from Capel Curig loop within Snowdonia National Park. However, parking facilities in Capel Curig may have charges, so it's always good to have some change or a payment method available.
Given the varied terrain and potential for boggy sections, good waterproof hiking boots are essential. Layers of clothing are recommended to adapt to changing weather conditions, along with waterproof outerwear. A map and compass (and the skills to use them) are advisable, as some parts of the trail can be tricky to follow, especially in poor visibility. Don't forget water, snacks, and a fully charged phone.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Snowdonia Slate Trail and the Llwybr yr Arweinydd, offering connections to other popular walking routes in the area.
Capel Curig is a well-known hub in Snowdonia and offers various amenities for hikers. You'll find pubs, cafes, and accommodation options in the village, making it a convenient place to start and finish your hike, or to refuel afterward.
The Crimpiau loop is generally graded as moderate, though some sources describe it as hard or strenuous due to steep and rocky sections. It requires good fitness and sure-footedness. While not ideal for absolute beginners, those with some hiking experience and a reasonable level of fitness should find it manageable, especially if prepared for varied terrain and potential navigation challenges.
Early morning Trek up Crimpau in the snowdonia national park. Was extremely challenging. Due to the recent storms the ground was crumbly, and water logged. Few of the paths weren't viable so had to readjust whilst in the grips of a current storm. Rained on, hailed on, blown around but man what a day, and what a trail. Need your big boy/girl pants for this one. Probably a lot easier in the summer.
Lovely hike with great views as part of the Trash Free Trails summit
We gathered at Plas y Brenin for 3rd Annual State of Our Trails Summit and kick-started the summit with the ultimate purposeful adventures. We headed up Crimpiau for a hike, full of inspirational conversations, learning about the landscape, connecting with nature and taking a moment at the top to learn some welsh pronunciations and honour the place where we were.
