Hahnenberg

Highlight • Summit

Beautiful all-round view. Tower is made of steel, floor on the tower is made of wooden floorboards. Note: The ladder is not fall-proof and a bit "wobbly". Sure-footedness and a head for heights is an advantage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I park to start the Le Hahnenberg and the Montagne des Singes loop?

The trail typically starts in Châtenois, often near the church. You can usually find parking available in the village to begin your hike.

Is this hiking trail dog-friendly?

The trail itself is generally dog-friendly, allowing you to enjoy the natural beauty with your canine companion. However, please note that dogs are not permitted inside the Montagne des Singes animal park due to the free-roaming Barbary macaques.

What is the best time of year to hike this loop?

Spring and autumn are ideal, offering pleasant temperatures and stunning views, especially with the changing colors of the vineyards. Summer is also a good option, as much of the route passes through shaded forests. Be prepared for potentially muddy and slippery sections after rain, regardless of the season.

Are there any permits or fees required to hike in the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park?

No, generally, hiking on marked trails within the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park, where this loop is located, does not require any specific permits or fees. However, standard park regulations regarding waste, wildlife, and fire apply.

What kind of terrain can I expect on the trail?

The trail offers diverse terrain. You'll start and end through vineyards with beautiful views over the plain of Alsace. Much of the route also traverses superb forests, providing shaded sections. There's a steady, regular climb initially towards Hahnenberg. Some sections might be muddy and slippery, especially after rain, so suitable footwear is recommended.

What notable sights or viewpoints will I encounter?

A major highlight is the panoramic view from the metal tower at the summit of Hahnenberg (531m), offering vistas of the vineyards, the Alsace plain, and even the Black Forest on clear days. You'll also pass the historical Georgenbrunnen fountain and catch glimpses of medieval castles like Ortenbourg, Ramstein, Haut-Koenigsbourg, and Kintzheim.

Does this trail intersect with other well-known paths?

Yes, the route partially follows sections of several other trails, including the Circuit de la Montagne des Singes, the Traversée du massif des Vosges,Châtenois-Thann, and the Alsatian castles path. You may also encounter parts of the GR 5 Vosges, Le Donon - Ballon d'Alsace.

Is the Le Hahnenberg and the Montagne des Singes loop suitable for families with children?

Considered a moderate hike, its length (around 9-10 km) and elevation gain might be challenging for very young children. However, older children who are used to hiking could enjoy the diverse scenery and the views. The nearby Montagne des Singes animal park is a popular family attraction, though it's separate from the trail itself.

Are there any cafes or places to eat near the trailhead in Châtenois?

Châtenois, being the starting point, is a village where you can typically find local amenities, including cafes or restaurants, to refresh yourself before or after your hike. It's advisable to check local listings for current opening hours.

What should I bring for this hike?

Given the moderate difficulty and varied terrain, we recommend bringing sturdy hiking shoes, sufficient water, snacks, and appropriate clothing layers for changing weather conditions. A map or GPS device is also helpful, and trekking poles can be beneficial for the ascents and descents, especially if paths are slippery.

How long does it take to complete this loop?

The loop typically takes between 3 hours 55 minutes to 4 hours to complete, depending on your pace and how long you spend enjoying the viewpoints.

Because I was finally camping in Alsace again, I decided to do a little hike around Chatenois. Mainly narrow paths and since it is mainly in the forest, it was also from the heat. You can omit the small detour to the monkey forest, since the longer path to Hahnenberg was closed off 🙈
