Melmore Beach

Highlight • Beach

Located in the shelter of Melmore Head, you will find this spectacular beach. With its fine golden sand and crystal-clear, almost turquoise water, Melmore Beach looks non-Irish on sunny days. It is the perfect place where the rugged Atlantic Drive briefly comes to rest. Photo tip: Photograph from the elevated road towards the bay to capture the beach's crescent shape and the water's colour gradations.

Also known as Murder Hole Beach, a new trail gives access to the bay which was previously across private land. At low tide you can walk across one large beach but at high tide, that one beach becomes two with Rough Island in the middle. There are also caves to explore. Please be aware that there are dangerous currents here so swimming is not permitted, as tempting as the water might look.
