A few steps from Varese there is a place that lives between the modern and the ancient, between the urban and the natural. This Tour, between nature and religion, is perfect for those who love getting lost in breathtaking landscapes and discovering corners of faith in the heart of Lombardy. The adventure starts from the Morosolo-Casciago station, a short train journey from Milan Central Station (about an hour and a quarter).

Your immersion in nature begins as soon as you leave the village of Velate behind. After about an hour's walk, the Campo dei Fiori Park welcomes you with a variety of breathtaking natural landscapes: mountains, waterfalls, lakes and karst springs. There is something for all tastes. Waiting for you is the ascent to the Sacro Monte di Varese: a spiritual journey through a series of 14 chapels; each a one-of-a-kind work of art. Every step brings you closer to the Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Monte, the beating heart of this sacred mountain. And don't worry if you feel tired: along the way you will find fountains to refresh you. And once you reach the top, a breathtaking panoramic view of the city of Varese and the surrounding plain awaits you, a sanctuary, a monastery and the village of Santa Maria, with its narrow alleys, tunnels and arcades.

After catching your breath and recharging your eyes with beauty, the journey continues with the ascent to the Scala nel Cielo del Campo dei Fiori. A corner of the world whose name does not betray its promise: a stairway that leads you to the top of the world, in the deep blue, between prayer cloths fluttering in the wind. It's like being in a corner of Tibet, with a breathtaking view of mountains and lakes. Before ending your day, don't forget to visit Monte Tre Croci, a symbol of Monte Calvario. Also from this point the view is incomparable.

For this excursion, I recommend that you bring along water and some snacks. You will find some along the way, but the Tour is long and it is always better to be prepared. I advise you not to forget your camera: it will be difficult to resist the temptation to take home a piece of the panorama that will keep you company throughout the day.

Pilgrimage Route to the Sacro Monte of Varese

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The ascent to the Sacro Monte di Varese is a pedestrian path open all year round. Great for the whole family, for children, even with dogs in tow. Wide and cobbled, it enjoys an excellent panoramic view along the entire route. Place of artistic and religious interest, due to the presence of the 15 stations of the Rosary in as many very impressive and richly decorated seventeenth-century chapels.
At the top is the Sanctuary, the Clausura convent and various panoramic terraces with restaurants. You can also go directly to the top by car or bus, but the beauty of it is the climb on foot (about 2.5km). Have a good excursion!

A panoramic point that offers a breathtaking view of the valley, with the Sacro Monte, the Po valley, Varese, the Rasa, the Valcuvia and Lake Lugano in the distance. The protective railing is adorned with fabrics and Tibetan prayer flags.

Mount Three Crosses

Highlight • Summit

On Monte Tre Croci there are three large white crosses in reinforced concrete, a summer destination for many hikers. On its south-western side is the abandoned structure of the Grand Hotel Campo dei Fiori.
