The Cotswold Way Circular Walk: Chipping Campden and Dover's Hill typically takes between 1.5 to 3.5 hours to complete, depending on your pace. There's also a shorter 3-mile option if you prefer to avoid some of the steeper sections.
The terrain is varied, featuring shaded woodlands, open fields, and stony tracks. You'll encounter a mix of grass and dirt paths, which can become muddy after rain. The walk includes some steep ascents and descents, notably the climb from Chipping Campden up to Dover's Hill. Despite these inclines, it's generally considered of moderate difficulty, suitable for those with moderate fitness. The route is stile-free.
The walk offers breathtaking scenery. You'll start in the charming market town of Chipping Campden Historic Market Town, known for its golden stone buildings. From Dover's Hill, you'll enjoy spectacular panoramic views over the Vale of Evesham and Malvern Hills. The route also passes through Lynches Wood, which is particularly beautiful in May when bluebells carpet the ground. You'll also see The Parish Church of Saint Catherine.
You can typically find parking in Chipping Campden, which serves as both the start and end point for this circular walk. It's advisable to check local parking options in the town centre before your visit.
Yes, the Cotswold Way Circular Walk: Chipping Campden and Dover's Hill is generally dog-friendly. However, as the route passes through open fields and potentially near livestock, it's always best to keep dogs on a leash, especially in agricultural areas or where signs indicate.
The trail can be enjoyed year-round, but spring (especially May for bluebells in Lynches Wood) and autumn offer particularly beautiful scenery and pleasant temperatures. Summer is also popular, but be prepared for potentially warmer weather. After wet weather, some sections can become muddy.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike this trail, as it is part of the public access network within the Cotswolds National Landscape.
Yes, the walk begins and ends in Chipping Campden Town Centre, a picturesque market town with various cafes and pubs where you can find refreshments before or after your hike.

Dover's Hill is a National Trust-managed site known for its incredible views and historical significance. It's the traditional venue for the annual Cotswold Olimpick Games, which have been held since 1612 and feature unique sports like shin-kicking.
The climb from Chipping Campden up to Dover's Hill involves an 80-meter elevation gain. While it's a steady ascent, it's described as easy and constant, maintaining an equal gradient without sudden steep sections. For those seeking a less strenuous option, a shorter 3-mile version of the walk is available that avoids some of the steeper parts.
No chance of seeing the views from Dover's Hill I've heard so much about on account of the fog! On the plus side, had the hillside all to myself.
The first half of this walk is much more enjoyable than the second. The route back includes about 1.5km on roads, about 700m on a main road and a further half km of footpath alongside it. Apart from the viewpoint at Dover's Hill we saw only three other walkers on the route. The path is slightly different in the last field on the route to that shown due to a fenced off building site. Directions for the whole route are excellent though. A nice enough walk, but not one of the Cotswolds' best.
