Forests, heaths and fens in North Brabant — discover De Kampina

Hiking

During this 7-kilometer circular walk through De Kampina you will discover how versatile North Brabant is. In addition to heaths, you will also pass through forests and numerous fens.

The settlement of Balsvoort is first mentioned in 1312. Three farms were built here in the following years. Here in the field you can see the remnants. During WWII, refugees were sheltered in the Balsvoort farm.

From this history lesson we move on to a nature lesson at the bee building of Natuurmonumenten. Here you will learn everything about the importance of bees for our nature. A fun and educational place for young and old!

You then walk through the meadows around a fen before you make meters across the Brabant heath again. You will meet many more friends there.

Just before the finish you walk through the floodplains of De Beerze. This is a true bird paradise, so don't forget your binoculars to spot all the waterfowl. You may also see the black stork.

The starting and ending point of the tour is pancake house De Rode Haktol, where you can park. If you come by public transport, get off at the Spoordonk, Kampina stop. From here it is a 20 minute walk to the start of the route.

You will not encounter any catering facilities along the way, so be sure to pack some water and snacks.

The Kampina turns into a purple paradise in August.

Foundations of the Balsvoort farmstead

Highlight • Historical Site

Here you once found the hamlet of Balsvoort, which consisted of only 4 or 5 farms in the 19th century. The contours of one of the farms have been visualized again.

Floodplain of the Beerze Valley

Highlight • Natural

You have now arrived at the most impressive part of the route: the retention basin or the floodplain of the Valley of De Beerze.

Follow the closely mown path along the edge of the area and keep your eyes peeled in the meantime. The wet, swampy area with the rough vegetation is an ideal place for kingfishers, frogs and dragonflies. It is also a true bird paradise. Look for the striking white egrets, the black stork is spotted here and you will find numerous water birds here all year round.

Beautiful route along fields, over heathland and through forests.

Walked with my son (biologist). Spotted kingfisher, buzzard, falcon.

I found this route at Natuurmonumenten. If you use their Nature Routes app, you will receive information about how an area with agricultural land, production forest and a largely canalized Beerze has been transformed into this beautiful area. The walk is varied with woods, heaths and fens.

Despite the many rain showers that fell today, I still wanted to get away from it all. So wear rain boots, hat and umbrella. The start was at a parking lot at the Logtsebaan in Oisterwijk (GPS: 51.543130,5.268852). Recommended!

Today we walked again in the beautiful and varied nature reserve De Kampina. Recommended!
