This moderate hike usually takes around 3 hours and 20 minutes to complete. This estimate is for the full 12.5 km (7.5 miles) loop.
While rated as moderate, the trail is generally well-defined and accessible for most skill levels. It does require good fitness due to its length and some mild uphill sections, but much of it is relatively flat after an initial climb.
The loop typically starts near Calgary Bay. You can find parking either directly at Calgary Beach or at the Calgary Art in Nature carpark, which also offers tearoom and gallery facilities.
The terrain is varied. You'll encounter gravelly sections near Calgary Beach, transitioning to a smooth, grassy sward. Further along, there are unpaved and natural sections, uneven woodland trails, gravel footpaths, and even some sandy beaches and surfaced roads. Be prepared for potentially muddy sections, especially after rain.
Expect breathtaking sea views throughout. The initial stretch offers wonderful vistas over the white sands of Calgary Bay. As you round the headland, the sea views extend to include the neighboring islands of Coll and Tiree. From Caliach Point Trig Point, you'll get panoramic views of islands like Rum and Eigg, Ardnamurchan Lighthouse, and on clear days, even the Cuillin of Skye.
The coastal location provides excellent opportunities for wildlife spotting. Keep an eye out for marine life such as dolphins and minke whales. Birdwatchers may also be lucky enough to spot sea eagles.
Yes, the route passes through many well-preserved clearance village houses and settlements, offering a glimpse into the island's past. You'll also pass an old granite pier, and the Caliach Point Trig Point itself is a notable landmark.
The Isle of Mull offers beautiful scenery year-round, but late spring to early autumn (May to September) generally provides the most favorable weather conditions for hiking, with longer daylight hours and milder temperatures. However, be prepared for changeable weather at any time.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, as it's a coastal and rural area, it's important to keep dogs under close control, especially near livestock or nesting birds, and to clean up after them.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to access the Calgary Bay to Caliach Point loop trail. It is freely accessible to the public.
Absolutely! Key highlights include the Picnic Area With Views of Calgary Beach, the scenic Calgary Bay Coastal Path, and the rewarding Caliach Point Trig Point, which offers expansive island views.
