This moderate hike usually takes around 3 hours and 25 minutes to complete. This duration can vary based on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the views or explore the highlights.
Yes, the route is a loop trail, starting and ending in Vagney. This means you won't be retracing your steps and can enjoy a varied landscape throughout your journey.
The trail typically starts from Vagney. While specific parking details aren't provided, Vagney is a common starting point for hikes in the area, and you can usually find public parking within the town.
Along the route, you'll encounter several interesting points. Key highlights include the scenic Hazelle Viewpoint, the beautiful Bouchot Waterfalls, and La Roche du Mettey. You might also pass by the Dolmen de la Hazelle and the Cascade de la Crache, offering a mix of natural beauty and historical interest.
The terrain is generally moderate, characteristic of the Vosges region. You can expect a mix of forest paths, some rocky sections, and potentially muddy areas, especially after rain. The route involves an elevation gain of approximately 324 meters, so there will be some uphill and downhill sections.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, it's always recommended to keep your dog on a leash, especially in areas with wildlife or near other hikers, and to follow local regulations within the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park.
The best time to hike this trail is typically from spring to autumn (April to October). During these months, the weather is generally milder, and the natural scenery is at its most vibrant. Winter hikes are possible but may require appropriate gear for snow and ice.
Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required for hiking on public trails within the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park. However, visitors are expected to respect the park's regulations, such as staying on marked paths, not disturbing wildlife, and packing out all trash.
Yes, this route overlaps with several other trails in the area. Notably, it covers 100% of the 'La Hazelle et les balcons du Mettey' trail and significant portions of 'Le Tour du Mettey' (64%) and 'Chemin des Savoyards' (57%). You might also encounter sections of 'Tour de Chèvre-Roche et Moyenmont' and 'Circuit des Balcons de la Hazelle par le chemin des Savoyards'.
Rated as moderate, the trail is suitable for hikers with a reasonable level of fitness. While not overly strenuous, the distance and elevation gain might be challenging for very young children or absolute beginners. It's best for families with older children or those accustomed to regular walks.
For this moderate hike, we recommend wearing comfortable hiking boots or sturdy shoes, as the terrain can be varied. Bring layers of clothing suitable for changing weather conditions, a waterproof jacket, sufficient water, snacks, a map or GPS device, and a first-aid kit. Trekking poles can also be helpful for stability on some sections.
Great tour. Park in Vagney in a large free car park with public toilets. The start and end of the route goes through the town, otherwise mostly through dense forest, so also suitable on hot days. The paths are mostly easy to walk, sometimes a bit rocky or with lots of roots. Good signage, but it changed from time to time on our tour (cross and circle). There are always great views with rest areas. But the highlight is definitely the waterfalls.
