The trail is well-signposted from the Ben Loyal Hotel in Tongue, which serves as a convenient starting point. Parking is generally available in the village of Tongue.
Yes, the trail is considered easy and is suitable for most fitness levels, including families. It's a relatively short out-and-back walk. However, the final section climbing to the castle is steep, and the trail is not suitable for pushchairs due to steps and rugged sections.
The trail starts with a downhill section through fields before crossing a footbridge over the Rhian Burn. It then ascends through deciduous woodland, becoming a wider track with a relatively steep gradient on the final approach to the castle. The surface is typically firm, with some semi-gravelled and rocky sections.
The primary highlight is the historic Castle Varrich itself, offering incredible panoramic views from its viewing platform. Along the way, you'll enjoy breathtaking vistas of the Kyle of Tongue, the village of Tongue, and the majestic mountains of Ben Loyal and Ben Hope. The bridge over Rhian Burn also provides splendid views.
While the castle is a ruin, a significant addition in 2017 was the installation of a steel spiral staircase within its walls. This provides safe access to the top, allowing you to reach an elevated viewing platform for extensive and spectacular panoramic views.
The Castle Varrich Trail is a relatively short out-and-back walk, approximately 3.3 kilometers (2 miles) round trip. It typically takes around 1 to 1.5 hours to complete, depending on your pace and how long you spend enjoying the views at the castle.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, as it passes through fields and areas with potential wildlife, it's always best to keep dogs under control, preferably on a leash, to protect local fauna and livestock.
The trail can be enjoyed year-round, but the best time is typically during the drier months from late spring to early autumn (May to September). This offers the most pleasant weather for hiking and clearer views. The remote location also makes it an excellent spot for stargazing.
No, there are no permits or entrance fees required to hike the Castle Varrich Trail. It is freely accessible to the public.
Sturdy footwear is recommended due to the uneven and rocky sections, though trainers might be acceptable in very dry conditions. Bring water, especially on warmer days, and consider layers of clothing as the weather in the Scottish Highlands can change quickly. Binoculars can enhance your experience of the panoramic views and wildlife.
No, due to steps, narrow paths, and rugged, steeper sections, the trail is not suitable for visitors with limited mobility, wheelchairs, or pushchairs.
After the Sandwood Bay and the Smoo Cave we had some time to stretch our legs again. Tongue is on the road to Thurso, on the north coast.
Nice walk to the old castle ruins, easy to do with children. There is good parking at the cemetery. There is a sidewalk from the cemetery to the beginning of the path in the village center (which is especially good when there are kids with you). Path to Castle is signposted. Depending on your pace, you can comfortably walk up for half an hour. Away from scree, but easily accessible. Once at the top you have a great view.
