Hiking

As part of the Nagelfluhkette Nature Park, it is the unique rock formations that give the Engenloch Gorge its charm. Shaped by the wild waters of the Bolgenach, this natural spectacle invites visitors into a picturesque setting, which also features a water trail.

The approximately one-and-a-half-hour circular hike starts directly…

Kommabrücke (Covered Wooden Bridge)

Highlight • Bridge

The Comma Bridge, the oldest covered wooden bridge in the country, has spanned the river 15 meters above the water for almost 300 years.

The water trail is highly recommended, as it passes many attractions, including water features for children, a wobbly suspension bridge, a running model of a water-powered saw, the Engenloch Gorge, and much more.

Bolgenach Suspension Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

You don't always have to be on the large suspension bridge to get the feeling. While it's short, it clearly conveys why it's named after it. Please only one person at a time; signs indicate this!

The Nagelfluhkette Nature Park is located on the German (Allgäu) and Austrian (Bregenzerwald) sides. When hiking, you'll often cross the green border. But the rocks with pebbles embedded in them are particularly special. It's very interesting to see.

Trail Reviews

Astrid
September 15, 2023, Kommabrücke – Engenloch-Schlucht Runde von Hittisau

A great, very varied tour, suitable for nature lovers. Beautiful path along the river with great highlights such as the suspension bridge, the water features and the view of the river from above. The gorge is simply incredibly beautiful and easy to walk and then the view when you come back out of the forest is unique. We recommend.

The water hiking trail in Hittisau Very well laid out and great to go. The rushing of the river accompanies you, sometimes calmly, sometimes powerfully. The path also leads through a gorge. The best thing is that the weather was dry beforehand, otherwise there could still be a lot of moisture dripping down from the rocks 😉 You should also have a head for heights. Actually, the circular route has an additional loop, which is unfortunately missing here (yet 😉).

A beautiful evening walk through Hittisau in the Bregenzerwald. The route largely followed the Hittisau Water Trail. The highlight of the trail along the Bolgenach River is the Engenloch Gorge, a wild river valley. A narrow path runs along rocky walls above the river, partially via steps. Since it was already getting dark, unfortunately, there are no photos of the beautiful views of the river valley.

Today with the grandchildren on the way in Hittisau, always following the water in this heat, then to the swimming pool.. 😄

We skipped the last section of the water trail. We parked at the village fountain in Hittisau (free of charge). If you want to read all the signs along the water hiking trail, you should allow significantly more time. Dogs must be kept on a leash in the entire municipal area of Hittisau!

Great hikes for beginners with a fantastic backdrop. Highly recommended with children, but not with prams.
