Venford Reservoir

Highlight • Natural

Hidden amongst the sprawling moorland of Dartmoor National Park, this is a lovely spot to explore. The reservoir is surrounded by beautiful woodland, moors and winding rivers where you can swim.

There's also varied wildlife as well as sheep and wild ponies. You can park at the reservoir, but spaces are hard to come by in the summer.

Dartmeet Climb

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

From the River Dart, over the cattle grid and straight up the ramp of tarmac, what the Dartmeet climb lacks in length at 0.6 miles (1km), it more than makes up in gradient!

The climb averages 11%, though measures 15% in some places. The view of Sharp Tor is worth it at the top though, on a good day.

The climb is listed in Simon Warren's '100 Greatest Cycling Climbs'. Good luck!

Widecombe in the Moor

Highlight • Settlement

Lovely little village in Dartmoor National Park, with quite a descent down into it from the east side.

There are some free public toilets which were clean and pleasant. Lots of nice looking pubs and cafes to stop at.

Hound Tor

Highlight • Viewpoint

Hound Tor is thought to be the inspiration of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes novel 'The Hound of the Baskervilles'. The granite outcrop is said to look like dogs peaking over the top of the rocks, hence its name.

On the south east side, there is the site of a deserted medieval village which was abandoned in the late 14th/early15th century.

Ullacombe Farm Cafe

Highlight • Cafe

Farm shop and cafe with some lovely homewares and a Mount Boon milk dispenser too. There's bike parking as you ride in infront of the farm shop. Look out for the alpacas and cattle as you ride in too!

Haytor Rocks Climb from Bovey Tracey

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

Home to the 2019 National Hill Climb Championships and featured on the Tour of Britain, Haytor is a very well known climb on the fringes of Dartmoor, gaining 1,100 feet (335 m) over its long 3.3 mile (5.4 km) course.

If you love long and steady climbs, this is definitely one for you, and you’ll enjoy the wooded lane giving way to rough and wild moorland as you approach the granite tor at the top. Good luck and enjoy!

Hemsworthy Gate

Highlight • Viewpoint

A spectacular rolling road section along here from Hay Tor to Hemsworthy Gate and from Hemsworthy Gate towards Widecombe, with smooth tarmac and incredible moorland views.

The gate refers to the cattle grid and stone wall near the road junction for Widecombe, Bickington and Hay Tor.
