Embark on the Hound Tor, Grimspound & Hameldown loop, a moderate mountain biking adventure spanning 9.3 miles (15.0 km) with 1195 feet (364 metres) of elevation gain, typically completed in 1 hour and 24 minutes. The route offers a diverse Dartmoor experience, transitioning from quiet tarmacked lanes to rough tracks with sandy earth and impressive rock slabs. You will ride through expansive open moorland, past iconic granite tors like Hound Tor, and enjoy panoramic views of Widecombe village and its surroundings, often colored by heather and gorse. Expect a mix of bridleways, rocky sections, and fast descents along the Hameldown Ridge, with close-cropped grass and granite boulders on Hamel Down.

This trail demands good fitness and advanced riding skills, making it suitable for seasoned mountain bikers. While some sections offer smooth paths, be prepared for challenging rocky terrain and significant climbs, as some parts may even require you to push your bike. The varied surfaces, including singletrack and unpaved sections, contribute to its moderate difficulty rating. Planning your ride for optimal conditions will enhance your experience on this popular route around Widecombe in the Moor.

The loop is rich in historical and natural significance, taking you past the well-preserved Bronze Age settlement of Grimspound, featuring 24 stone roundhouses. You will also encounter the distinctive granite outcrops of Hound Tor and Hameldown Tor, which are prominent features of the Dartmoor landscape. The trail offers a condensed view of Dartmoor's beauty, from ancient settlements to scenic ridge-top vistas, making it a notable and popular choice for mountain biking in the region.

Jay's Grave Bridleway

Highlight (Segment) • Historical Site

Jay's Grave is named for the grave of a girl who committed suicide at the eastern end of the trail. Mysterious flowers are still laid there, although no-one claims responsibility. Some believe the grave is haunted as a result.

From a mountain biking perspective the trail is an ancient sunken road which has been rendered straightforward by sanitisation, but at least it's a (rare in these parts) trail which doesn't head sharply up or down!

Grimspound Bronze-Age Settlement

Highlight • Historical Site

Grimspound is situated on one of the highest points of the moor. Once home to dozens of people and their livestock, the eerie setting was where Sherlock Holmes spent the night in the novel, the Hound of the Baskervilles. The remains of these 24 stone roundhouses date from the late Bronze Age (about 1450–700 BC).

Hameldown Ridge

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The Two Moors Way trail along the Hameldown ridge is a wonderful ride up or down. It's fast in descent without being too steep to make climbing it impossible. Great views as well!

St Pancras Church, Widecombe-in-the-Moor

Highlight • Religious Site

Know as the Cathedral of the Moor, Widecombe's pretty St Pancras church is quite something to behold. Its tower is 120-foot (37 m) high and can be seen fro considerable distance.

The church was damaged during the Great Thunderstorm of 1638 – with hundreds of parishioners inside when lightning struck, killing four. Folklore says the devil visited, causing the lightning.
