The terrain is highly varied and challenging. It often begins with a moderate ascent through shaded forest, but quickly becomes much steeper, featuring rugged stairs and switchbacks, especially past the waterfalls. Sections can be rocky, eroded, and narrow, sometimes worn down to bedrock. While some parts are smooth, the prevalence of steep, technical sections means sustained jogging is difficult and often requires technical footwork or power hiking.
The loop offers breathtaking scenery, including several waterfalls like Hardy Falls, Rodney Falls, and the unique Pool of the Winds. You'll also enjoy expansive views of the Columbia River Gorge, the Bonneville Dam, and distant Cascade peaks from various viewpoints, especially near the Hamilton Mountain summit and along Hardy Ridge and Phlox Point.
Due to its difficult rating, significant elevation gain (over 1,000 meters), and varied terrain including steep, rocky, and eroded sections with stairs, continuous jogging is very challenging. Even experienced trail runners often find themselves alternating between jogging and power hiking on this route.
The trail is generally best visited from spring through fall. In spring, you can enjoy wildflowers and lush greenery, while fall offers vibrant foliage. Summer provides clear views, but can be hot. Winter conditions can bring snow and ice, making the already challenging terrain even more difficult and potentially hazardous.
Yes, as the trail is located within Beacon Rock State Park, a Discover Pass is required for vehicle access. You can purchase a day pass or an annual pass. Check the Washington State Parks website for current fees and purchasing options.

Yes, the route incorporates sections of several other trails. You will traverse parts of the Hamilton Mountain Loop, Hardy Ridge Loop, Hamilton Mountain Trail, Hardy Creek Trail, East Hardy Ridge Trail, West Hardy Ridge Trail, and Phlox Point Trail during your journey.
The ascent past the waterfalls on Hamilton Mountain involves very steep sections with rugged stairs and switchbacks, which are physically demanding. However, these lead to incredibly rewarding panoramic views of the Columbia River Gorge and surrounding peaks from the Hamilton Mountain saddle and summit. The Hardy Ridge and Phlox Point section also offers diverse scenery and a different perspective.
Given the trail's difficulty and length, it's essential to bring plenty of water, high-energy snacks, and wear appropriate trail running shoes with good grip. Layers of clothing are recommended due to changing elevations and weather conditions. A map or GPS device is also advisable, along with basic first-aid supplies.
Beacon Rock State Park offers restrooms near the trailhead. For additional amenities like cafes, pubs, or accommodations, you would need to venture a short distance to nearby towns in the Columbia River Gorge area.
