This route was planned by komoot.
This trail is rated as moderate. It covers a distance of approximately 9.5 km with an elevation gain of around 130 meters. Hikers can generally expect to complete the loop in about 2 hours and 35 minutes, depending on their pace and stops.
The terrain is varied, featuring dirt paths, sections of paved road, and some ascents balanced with flatter stretches. You'll hike through the distinctive dry limestone plateau known as the "causse de Limogne," encountering wooded areas and traditional hamlets.
The trail is rich in megalithic structures, including several classified Historic Monuments. Key dolmens you'll encounter are the Dolmen de Joncas, the Dolmen de Ferrières, and the impressive Dolmen du lac d'Aurié (Pech Lapeyre), known for its massive 117-ton table stone. You'll also see traditional dry stone cabins (*cazelles* or *gariottes*), ancient wells, and the Bézou fountain with its monolithic trough.
The trail is a loop, and you can typically start and park in the commune of Limogne-en-Quercy. Specific parking areas are usually well-marked within the village, providing convenient access to the route.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, it's always recommended to keep your dog on a leash, especially when passing through hamlets, near livestock, or in areas where wildlife might be present. Please remember to clean up after your pet.
Spring and autumn are often considered the best times to hike this trail. The weather is usually milder, and the natural scenery is particularly vibrant or colorful. Summer can be hot on the limestone plateau, so early mornings or late afternoons are preferable if hiking during that season.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike this trail or to access the Parc naturel régional des Causses du Quercy. The park aims to preserve its natural and cultural heritage while allowing public access for recreation.
Yes, the route intersects with several other paths. Most notably, it largely follows the official trail "Les dolmens de Limogne-en-Quercy" and also passes through sections of "Le Chemin des Fontaines" and "Le Chemin des Dolmens." A small part of the trail also intersects with the GR®65, a historic route of the Camino de Santiago.
For this moderate hike, we recommend bringing comfortable hiking shoes, sufficient water, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and a light snack. A camera is also a good idea to capture the unique dolmens and landscapes. Given the varied terrain, layers of clothing are advisable.
Yes, the trail is suitable for families with children who are accustomed to hiking. Its moderate difficulty and the engaging historical sights, especially the dolmens, can make it an interesting and educational experience for all ages. The varied terrain keeps it engaging without being overly strenuous.
Limogne-en-Quercy, where the trail typically starts, is a village that offers some basic amenities. You may find local cafes, restaurants, or small shops where you can get refreshments or a meal before or after your hike.
In itself a very nice walk, until the last km's of asphalt! Take the 1.2 km route to the center of Limogne earlier when you see this sign for the first time. Saves a lot of asphalt. Made an extra side trip to a dolmen outside the route. Komoot dropped out here until we were back on the route. So this is not there now.
