The Alligator Hill Trail system offers a range of difficulties. While the overall route is considered moderate, it features three interconnected loops that cater to different fitness levels, from easy to advanced. You'll encounter long, gradual hills, but some segments, especially on the Advanced Loop, include steeper climbs and water bars that create six-inch steps. The 1.5-mile sections leading to the Alligator Hill (Islands Lookout) from either the Forest Haven or Stocking Road trailheads are considered relatively strenuous climbs.
The trail winds through diverse terrain, primarily a beech-maple forest, with sections also passing through brushy fields and pine plantations. You'll experience long, gradual hills, but also some steeper segments, particularly on the Advanced Loop. Hikers will also observe the forest's recovery from a severe windstorm in 2015, which significantly impacted many trees in the area.
The trail is renowned for its spectacular scenic overlooks. The Alligator Hill (Islands Lookout) offers panoramic vistas of Lake Michigan, the Manitou Islands, and Sleeping Bear Point. On clear days, you might even spot South Fox Island and freighters. Another key viewpoint is the Big Glen Lookout, providing expansive views over Big Glen Lake. You can also see an historic charcoal kiln at the trailhead, a remnant from the area's logging days.
The main access point is from the Forest Haven trailhead. Another option is the Stocking Road trailhead. Both lead to the various loops of the Alligator Hill Trail system. There is an historic charcoal kiln located at the main trailhead.
Yes, dogs are generally allowed on the trail, but they must be kept on a leash at all times. However, please note that pets are prohibited on the trail from December 1 to March 31, as it is designated for cross-country skiing during the winter months.
Yes, a National Park Pass is required for trail use, as the Alligator Hill Trail is located within the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. This pass covers your entrance fee to the park.
The trail offers different experiences throughout the year. Fall is particularly spectacular, as the foliage explodes in vibrant colors, making for breathtaking views. In winter, the trail transforms into a designated cross-country ski trail, offering easy, intermediate, and advanced loops with downhill runs and climbs.
Yes, the route intersects with several other paths. You'll find sections of the Intermediate Trail, Alligator Hill Hiking & Ski Trail, Easy Trail, Big Glen Lookout Trail, and the Advanced Trail. A small portion also overlaps with the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail.
Beyond its stunning views, the trail is notable for its unique topography, named for its 'alligator-shaped ridge' formed by glacial activity. It's also the only trail system within Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore where horseback riding is permitted. In winter, it becomes a popular cross-country ski destination. You can also witness the forest's natural recovery from a major 2015 windstorm.
Yes, the Alligator Hill Trail system features three interconnected loops designed for varying fitness levels: easy, intermediate, and advanced. This allows hikers to choose a route that best suits their preferences and experience.
If you're looking for a more challenging ascent to the panoramic Alligator Hill (Islands Lookout), starting from either the Forest Haven or Stocking Road trailheads will provide a relatively strenuous 1.5-mile uphill climb through the maple-beech forest. For a different experience, consider visiting in winter when the trail is groomed for cross-country skiing, offering unique downhill runs and climbs.
