The primary access point is from the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. During winter months when the Motor Nature Trail is closed, you can park at Rainbow Falls Parking B and walk approximately a quarter-mile along the road to reach the trailhead.
No, dogs are generally not permitted on most trails within Great Smoky Mountains National Park, including the Baskins Creek Trail. This is to protect wildlife and ensure visitor safety. Only two trails in the park, the Gatlinburg Trail and the Oconaluftee River Trail, allow dogs.
The trail offers different experiences throughout the year. Winter and early spring provide clearer mountain views due to less foliage. Summer brings abundant wildflowers and lush greenery. Be aware that the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, which provides primary access, closes during winter.
There is no entrance fee to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. However, if you plan to park for more than 15 minutes anywhere within the park, a valid parking tag is required. These tags can be purchased online or at visitor centers.
The trail is generally considered easy to moderate. It begins with a short, easy climb before leveling out, then descends towards Baskins Creek and the waterfall. The return journey is predominantly uphill. Expect 'rooty' sections, slippery loose gravel, and several creek crossings, including Falls Branch, which lacks a footbridge. The last 50 yards to the falls are steep, rugged, and can be slippery with mud and moss.
The main highlight is the beautiful, two-tiered Baskins Creek Falls, a 40-foot waterfall. Around 1.1 miles into the hike, a short side trail leads to the historic Baskins Cemetery. The trail also offers a sense of seclusion compared to more popular routes and passes through a quiet forest with diverse trees and wildflowers.
While generally rated easy to moderate, the unique descent to the falls means the return trip is uphill, which can be challenging for some. The last 50 yards to the falls are steep and rugged. Families with younger children or beginners should be prepared for these sections, especially after rain when creek crossings can be wet and the path slippery.
Given the varied terrain and potential for slippery sections, especially near the falls and at creek crossings, sturdy hiking boots are recommended. Trekking poles can be very helpful, particularly for the steep descent to the falls and the uphill return. Bring water, snacks, and be prepared for potentially wet feet if there have been recent rains.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Grapeyard Ridge Trail.
Hikers frequently report seeing deer, various bird species, and chipmunks. As with any trail in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, there's always a possibility of encountering black bears, so it's important to be bear-aware and know how to react if you see one.
Unusually for a waterfall hike in the Great Smoky Mountains, this trail primarily descends to reach Baskins Creek Falls. This means the significant uphill climb occurs on your return journey, which is a key consideration for planning your energy and pace.
