This is a straightforward yet beautiful route between two picturesque bays on either side of Dinas ‘island’. It makes use of the well-surfaced path through a lovely valley between Pwllgwaelod and Cwm-yr-Eglwys. You can do it in either direction, though an out and back from Pwllgwaelod has the advantage of finishing at the Old Sailors pub.
There are few gradients to contend with and when they do occur they’re short lived. Pwllgwaelod can be reached via the wheelchair accessible Poppit Rocket, or there’s the option of parking at either end of the route.
From the car park, pass the pub and enjoy the views out across Pwllgwaelod’s beach towards Fishguard. The beach here is sheltered from the wind and is a good place to watch the sunset. Pick up the path through the valley, which was formed in the Ice Age by surging meltwater.
Eventually, you arrive at Cwm-yr-Eglwys and the ruined St Brynach's church, an evocative sight and a reminder of nature’s brutal power. In 1859, a devastating storm washed much of the building away.
There are facilities here if you require them, otherwise it’s a case of following your outward route, perhaps with the promise of a cold drink at the Old Sailors beckoning.
