This is an easy, shorter trail. Most hikers complete it in about 45 minutes to an hour and a half, depending on how much time you spend admiring the petroglyphs and exploring Mouse's Tank.
The trail follows the bottom of a sandy wash, surrounded by stunning red sandstone formations. It's generally flat and easy to navigate, but be prepared for walking in sand.
The trail begins at the Start of the Petroglyph Trail within Valley of Fire State Park. There is a designated parking area at the trailhead.
The primary feature is the abundance of ancient petroglyphs etched into the dark sandstone cliffs and rocky fins. You'll see hundreds of designs, including figures, animals, and symbols, visible early in the hike. The trail culminates at Mouse's Tank, a natural basin that often holds water.
Yes, this trail is considered very easy and is excellent for beginners and families. Its short distance, minimal elevation gain, and fascinating petroglyphs make it a rewarding experience for all ages.
Given its desert location, the best time to hike is during the cooler months, from late fall through early spring (October to April). Summers can be extremely hot, making hiking less enjoyable and potentially dangerous.
Yes, dogs are permitted on the trail within Valley of Fire State Park, but they must be kept on a leash at all times. Please remember to clean up after your pet.
Yes, as this trail is located within Valley of Fire State Park, there is an entrance fee required to access the park. You can pay at the park entrance station. No additional permits are needed for hiking this specific trail.
Even though it's a short trail, always carry water, especially in the desert. Sun protection (hat, sunscreen) is also highly recommended. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for the sandy terrain.
Valley of Fire State Park offers several other scenic and easy trails with unique rock formations and historical sites. While this trail is unique for its concentration of petroglyphs, you might enjoy exploring other short hikes within the park for different geological features.
