Hiking

Embark on an easy hike through the picturesque Rosehall Forest, leading you to the enchanting Cassley (Achness) Falls. This pleasant loop covers 3.3 miles (5.3 km) with a modest elevation gain of 368 feet (112 metres), making it suitable for most fitness levels. You can expect to complete the journey in about 1 hour and 30 minutes, enjoying woodland scenery and natural paths, though some riverbanks near the falls feature stone steps.

Before you set off, you will find a community-built log cabin at the car park. This cabin serves as an information center and a picnic area, offering interpretative details about the surrounding area. The trail is well-marked, ensuring a straightforward experience for families and those hiking with dogs. It is a popular choice for a leisurely outdoor excursion.

As you explore, look for the impressive Achness Falls, which feature an upper 6-meter drop and a lower 12-meter drop, transforming into a torrent during high water. These falls are a temporary barrier for Atlantic salmon migrating upstream. The route also passes a historic chapel and an old graveyard, adding a touch of history to the natural beauty. Keep an eye out for sika deer, as they are sometimes spotted in the area.

Achness Falls (Cassley Falls)

Highlight • Natural Monument

This beautiful spot is known locally as Cassley Falls, but Ordnance Survey maps name them as Achness Falls. This name is derived from "Achadh an Eas", meaning field of the waterfall.

Cassley Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Where the A837 crosses the River Cassley before it meets the Oykel at Rosehall, Cassley Bridge is a stone arched bridge dating back to 1823. Take care when you cross, as the steep raised profile can make it difficult to see road users approaching from the opposite side.
