Parts of Epping Forest have been continually wooded since Neolithic times, and during the 12th century it was a favourite royal hunting ground of Henry II. Covering more than 6,000 acres (2,428 ha) of public space, the forest stretches 12 miles (19.3 km) from Manor Park to Epping, creating a green link between London and rural Essex. Owned and managed by the City of London and assisted by volunteer conservation groups, two-thirds of the forest is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to the ancient pollard beech forest and the fungi and plant life that this supports.
There are many miles of great trails that explore the forest. This Tour is 7.5 miles (12.1 km) long, but if you’d prefer a shorter loop there are nine waymarked trails ranging from the 1.25-mile (2 km) Gifford Trail up to the 6.6-mile (10.6 km) Oak Trail. The running is fun and engaging, varied underfoot and surrounded by stunning mixed woodland.
If you fancy a longer route you can follow the Epping Forest Centenary Walk from Manor Park in East London and join this Tour in Chingford. The Centenary Walk is a 15-mile (24 km) trail that continues north to Epping where you can join the Essex Way to extend your adventure even further.
There’s a wealth of cafe and restaurant options in Chingford, while the popular Original Tea Hut is well placed about half-way around the Tour. Easily accessible by train from London and further afield, this Tour starts at Chingford mainline station.
