Running

The largest of the Royal Parks, Richmond Park is an oasis for runners in the busy south-west of the city. Running over open grassland grazed by herds of deer and through areas of woodland alive with birdsong, it’s easy to forget your proximity to the capital – although the fleeting views of the London skyline from the park’s high points are an enjoyable reminder. Created by Charles I in the 17th century, it’s a National Nature Reserve, Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Grade I listed Historic Park.

The Tamsin Trail is a multi-user path that traces the perimeter of Richmond Park. It’s 7.35 miles (11.85 km) long with a couple of small hills near to Kingston Gate. You can join the trail at any of the entrances to the park but this Tour starts at Richmond station, which adds a short hill and a little extra distance. There’s lots to see as you run, from the local wildlife, including deer and parakeets, to the spectacular protected view all the way to St Paul’s Cathedral from King Henry’s Mound near Pembroke Lodge.

There are plenty of refreshment stops around Richmond Park and in Richmond itself. The Richmond Hill Bakery is en route between the station and the park, while the Roehampton Gate cafe is about halfway around the loop. If you need any running kit, Sporting Feet is on King Street.

Amersham is a very nice place to ride through. In some places it feels like you're really far away from any city. Nature is preserved very well, the drivers are kind and there's a really welcoming atmosphere overall. Make sure you have spare inner tubes or set your tyres tubeless in case you get a nail in your tyre like me :(

Poet's Corner Pollinator Garden

Highlight • Viewpoint

Gorgeous little secluded garden in Richmond Park, near Pembroke lodge. Lots of wildflowers and benches to sit on and enjoy the view. Well worth a mini detour to run or walk through and take a load off for a few minutes. 🙌🏻

View from King Henry's Mound

Highlight • Historical Site

King Henry's Mound is a prehistoric burial chamber. The steep sides and elevated position make it a great viewpoint - King Henry VII is reported to have stood here while out hunting.

If you're running a loop of Richmond Park, it's worth the short detour to admire the views, including the famous protected view of St. Pauls Cathedral.

Tamsin Trail Along Beverley Brook

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

The Tamsin Trail follows the 7.35-mile (11.8 km) outer circuit of Richmond Park. It's a shared path with runners, walkers and cyclists. Underfoot it's a combination of gravel trail and some sections of tarmac. There are several cafes and ice-cream vans for refreshments along the way, as well as lots of interesting features to look at including the local deer and parakeets.
This section to the south-east of the park follows Beverley Brook, a pretty stream that cuts across the grassy parkland.
