Road cycling

Rolling terrain meets crisp, steep climbs on this tour. You are constantly on asphalt. The 1,000 meter mark is easily exceeded. The best thing to do is to start the tour with plenty of snacks in your jersey pocket and definitely not tired legs. Since there are some steep passages, you should pay attention to possible potholes or patchy sections, especially on descents.

You start your tour in the east of Wuppertal, on the Nordbahntrasse in Oberbarmen. On the former railway line you can curl up wonderfully - always with consideration for the other people cycling and strolling. Like the trains once did, you now jet through the Schee Tunnel. In summer, this offers great cooling and regardless of the season, lights on the bike are mandatory here and in the other tunnels on the route. If the tunnel is closed because of the bats wintering there, a detour is signposted. After going through the tunnel, it goes via Hasslinghausen, Hiddinghausen and the center of Sprockhövel in the direction of nature. And that means in this region at the same time that it gets sweaty. You can test your legs on the Hibbelweg. At the latest on Efringhauser Straße you have arrived completely in the idyll: On the side of the road, grass-green hills, deep green forest and farmhouses alternate.

And don't worry, the next demanding climb is already waiting for you. On the Böhnkesweg even a serpentine completes the climbing fun. While you then pass Velbert-Nierenhof, you have time to catch your breath. You have now arrived at the northernmost part of the tour - in the south of Essen. The Baldeneysee is only a stone's throw away. But instead of watching or driving boats, the tour takes you back to the hilly scenery via tree-lined country roads.

After you have left Velbert-Langenberg behind you, you drive on the Windrather Straße and its organic farms on the side of the road, one of the hubs of Elfringhauser Schweiz. So that you can look at the farms in peace and quiet, you are on the way uphill again. You seem to be far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. But that's not entirely true. Because in just a few kilometers you are back in the Wuppertal city area and thus back on the flat Nordbahntrasse for the last ten kilometers. You deserve this relaxed finale.

The start and end point of the tour is Wuppertal-Oberbarmen train station. In addition, the train stations of Velbert-Nierenhof and Velbert-Langenberg are right on the route. As far as possible coffee stops are concerned, you have a large selection thanks to several through-roads. There are also farm cafés in the Windrath valley and beer gardens and the like on the Nordbahntrasse.

Schee Tunnel

Highlight (Segment) • Structure

The Schee Tunnel heralds the eastern end of the Nordbahntrasse. During the winter period it is closed at night to protect the bats. In summer it is a nice cool down. Despite the lighting in the tunnels, you should definitely have a light on your bike on the Nordbahntrasse, because especially in summer it can happen that our friend and helper carries out checks and imposes fines if there is no light.

As the photos show, the asphalt is in wonderful condition along the entire length between Felderbachstraße and Wodantal. To the east a moderate incline that is easy to drive!

Höhenweg Velberter Schweiz

Highlight • Trail

Most of the trail is newly asphalted, there is almost no traffic and the landscape and the ever-changing views are fantastic. But you have to like going uphill 😉.
