You can typically find parking near the impressive Ridracoli Dam, which is a common starting point for this loop tour. This area provides convenient access to the trailhead.
This trail is considered of moderate difficulty, requiring good fitness and sure-footedness. While paths are mostly accessible, be prepared for some steep ascents and uneven terrain. Sturdy hiking boots are highly recommended.
The trail is enjoyable across multiple seasons. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and vibrant foliage. Summer is also suitable, with the dense forests providing shade, and small waterfalls offering opportunities to cool off. Winter hiking is possible, but be prepared for colder conditions and potentially snow or ice.
Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required for hiking this trail within the Foreste Casentinesi National Park. However, it's always a good idea to check the official park website for any updated regulations or specific area restrictions before your visit.
The terrain is diverse, ranging from well-maintained mule tracks through dense forests to more uneven sections with steep ascents. It's classified as 'E' (Escursionistico) according to Italian trekking standards, meaning it's suitable for hikers on marked trails, possibly with steep sections and easy rock passages requiring hand use for balance.
You'll be treated to stunning views of Lake Ridracoli, especially from elevated points like the Cà di Sopra Hut. The route also passes by the impressive Ridracoli Dam, and various ruins of abandoned farmhouses, such as 'La Seghettina di Sopra', offering a glimpse into the region's past.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, as it's located within the Foreste Casentinesi National Park, it's important to keep your dog on a leash to protect the local wildlife and ensure a pleasant experience for all hikers.
Yes, sections of this loop tour overlap with other established trails. You'll find yourself on parts of the Grande Circuito della Romagna: Tappa 8, the Sentiero Natura di Ridracoli, and the Grande Circuito della Romagna: Tappa 7.
Yes, the Cà di Sopra Hut is a popular spot offering panoramic views of the lake and local dishes. There's also a Picnic Area by Lago di Ridracoli near the start/end for a more casual break.
Excluding stops, this approximately 11.3 km loop typically takes about 4 to 5 hours to complete, given its moderate difficulty and around 650 meters of elevation gain.
Given the moderate difficulty and varied terrain, it's advisable to bring sturdy hiking boots, sufficient water, snacks, and appropriate clothing layers. A map or GPS device is also recommended, as well as sun protection and insect repellent.
A very, very touristy dam and not as spectacular as other similar structures, the lake in the end is nothing more than a basin with steep banks that cannot be used except with artificial platforms for mooring boats. For lovers of nature and silence it is not the ideal place, especially in my case, as despite it being a weekday, I managed to find a noisy school group on a trip to the Ca' di sopra refuge. On holidays it is obviously much worse with restaurants and shops open. However, once you have passed the refuge where you get there with the first climb that makes you select, from that moment on continuing with the circular tour you are left completely alone because the climb becomes very steep and not for everyone. The paths are very well maintained and continuously signposted, there are also several directional signs. As of today, October 3, 2023, path 237 from Ca' Sopra to Lame is closed due to a landslide.
Unfortunately, the app stopped working correctly and did not register well km and overall elevation gain .. nice ride, wet, lucky panoramic =) 😀
