Climb to Monte Grappa via the Strada degli Alpini

Road cycling

The temple of Antonio Canova in Possagno is the starting point of the toughest of the climbs to Monte Grappa: the Strada degli Alpini. This road dating back to the period of the Great War is suitable for those who already have consolidated experience and want to challenge their limits..

Leaving the village of the Vardanega district, the slopes immediately become demanding, up to a maximum point recorded among all the paved climbs of 27%. Around the eighth kilometer you will meet the main route coming from Monte Tomba, from here you still have a couple of harsh kilometers left up to the "salto della capra".

Going around Monte Meate, you will immerse yourself in the Valle delle Mure where you will pedal in a beautiful mountain landscape that will lead you to Pian de la Bala, and from there on to the junction with the Strada Generale Giardino which will lead you with one last effort to the summit.

Refreshment points along this route are practically absent.

View of the Tempio Canoviano

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Canova Temple is the parish church that Antonio Canova wanted to build at his own expense for his hometown. The first stone was laid on 11 July 1819.
The expense of the temple was supported almost entirely by the sculptor and by the community of Possagno, who provided some materials and voluntary work.
Today the temple can be visited inside on designated days and times.

Strada degli Alpini (Monte Grappa Ascent)

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

This road is considered by many to be one of the most challenging climbs on Monte Grappa, it is entirely asphalted with quite narrow sections. It doesn't leave a moment's breathing space with peaks even well above 20%!

Val delle Mure

Highlight (Segment) • Gorge

It is one of the most important valleys of the Grappa, and marks it deeply towards the north-east.
This is the upper part of Val Calcina, which flows into Alano di Piave, a tributary of the Piave. The upper part, the Val delle Mure, is gentler, flatter and more grassy. It starts from the Forcella del Boccaor which overlooks the Venetian plain above the very high crags of the Val San Liberale.
It is interesting that the Val San Liberale (Valle del Lastego) with its strong erosion profile has 'captured' the river basin of the upper part of the Val delle Mure which extended as far as the Cima del Grappa.
