The loop offers varied terrain. The Railroad Trail section is generally flat for about 0.75 miles, following an old railroad bed. However, its western end becomes more challenging with hills and over 200 stairs. The Walter F. Mondale River Trail, which runs along the St. Croix River, is hilly with sections of bare rock, gravel, and some stairs, making it an intermediate-level path. For those seeking more, the connected Sandstone Bluffs Trail features steep terrain and over 300 stairs.
Yes, this trail is located within Interstate State Park. A valid Minnesota State Park vehicle permit is required for entry. You can purchase daily or annual permits at the park office or self-pay stations.
Dogs are generally welcome on trails within Minnesota State Parks, including this loop, but they must be kept on a leash no longer than six feet at all times. Please remember to clean up after your pet.
Hikers are treated to stunning views of the St. Croix River valley, a National Scenic Riverway. You'll encounter impressive sandstone cliffs and bluffs, and unique geological features like the numerous glacial potholes, some of which are very deep. The Glacial Potholes are a significant attraction within the park.
The trail is enjoyable in most seasons. Spring brings lush greenery, while fall offers spectacular autumn colors along the river valley. Summer is popular, but be prepared for warmer temperatures. Winter hiking is possible, but conditions can be icy or snowy, especially on stairs and hilly sections, so appropriate gear is essential.
The loop is generally considered easy, making it suitable for most fitness levels. However, certain sections, particularly the western end of the Railroad Trail with its 200+ stairs and the hilly Walter F. Mondale River Trail, present more of a challenge. Families with younger children or those new to hiking might prefer to stick to the flatter sections or be prepared for some strenuous climbs.
Parking is available within Interstate State Park. A good starting point is near the Interstate Park Visitor Center, which provides access to various trailheads, including those for this loop.
The diverse ecosystem of Interstate State Park supports various wildlife. Along the St. Croix River, you might spot great blue herons, turkey vultures, and bald eagles. Keep an eye out for other birds and small mammals common to the region.
Yes, the route passes through sections of several other trails. Notably, it utilizes parts of the Railroad Trail and the Walter F. Mondale River Trail. It also intersects with sections of the IAT - Saint Croix Falls Segment and the Sandstone Bluffs Trail, offering opportunities to extend your hike.
For a slightly less strenuous experience, consider hiking the loop in a clockwise direction. This approach tackles the steeper, stair-filled sections of the Railroad Trail's western end and the hilly Walter F. Mondale River Trail on the ascent, leaving the flatter railroad bed section for the descent or end of your hike.
This was our most challenging "Recovery Walk" since my spinal fracture last April 27, 2024. We hiked 3.33 miles with a 325-foot ascent. Don't tell my neurosurgeon and physical therapist. They might say it was a little too challenging. So far, back and leg pain is no worse than usual.
